Social forest inventory Digital surface models based on UAV aerial images – evaluation and comparison to LiDAR data
نویسنده
چکیده
Digital surface models (DSMs) generated by image matching from aerial images obtained using UAV were evaluated against field reference data and compared to LiDAR data. The performance of DSMs was evaluated both visually and with quantitative tests. In quantitative tests, the ability of DSM to estimate 1) individual tree heights, 2) canopy height and 3) crown projection area were evaluated. The UAV based DSMs were provided to UH by MosaicMill. Also the point clouds from which DSM was calculated were provided. The LiDAR based DSMs were generated from discretereturn LiDAR data obtained in summer 2010. Three different flying altitudes (1.3 km, 2 km and 3 km) were used. Field reference data consisted of 5 plots in seedling stands and 4 plots in mature stands. For the estimation of canopy height and crown projection area, reference DSM was calculated for each plot using field-measured tree heights and allometric models for crown width and shape.

Performance evaluation of classification trees for building detection from aerial images and lidar data: a comparison of classification trees models
This study assesses the performance of three classification trees (CT) models (Entropy, Gain Ratio and Gini) for building detection by the fusion of laser scanner data and multi-spectral aerial images. Data from four study areas with different sensors and scene characteristics were used to assess the performance of the models. The process of performance evaluation is based on four criteria: mod...
متن کاملAerial images and LIDAR Fusion Applied in Forest Boundary Detection
-Forest boundary delineation is one of the key issues of forest management for Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). The proposed approach in this paper focuses on the detection of forest boundaries with special emphasis on spatially contiguous and reproducible results by using both aerial images and LIDAR data. The used Green Vegetation Index (GVI) is helpful to find green vegetation areas wh...
متن کامل[Article] UAV PHOTOGRAMMETRY WITH OBLIQUE IMAGES: FIRST ANALYSIS ON DATA ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING
In recent years, many studies revealed the advantages of using airborne oblique images for obtaining improved 3D city models (e.g. including façades and building footprints). Expensive airborne cameras, installed on traditional aerial platforms, usually acquired the data. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of acquire and use oblique images for the 3D reconstruction of a hi...
متن کاملA Photogrammetric Workflow for the Creation of a Forest Canopy Height Model from Small Unmanned Aerial System Imagery
The recent development of operational small unmanned aerial systems (UASs) opens the door for their extensive use in forest mapping, as both the spatial and temporal resolution of UAS imagery better suit local-scale investigation than traditional remote sensing tools. This article focuses on the use of combined photogrammetry and “Structure from Motion” approaches in order to model the forest c...
متن کاملIntergration of High Resolution Aerial Images and Airborne Lidar Data for Forest Delineation
Forest boundary is one of the important parameters in Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). It is mainly delineated by aerial photo interpretation according to the defined “Forest/Non-forest decision” rules at each sample plot. However, it is not suitable for local assessment of forest stands with such kind of coarse grid sampling design. This paper presents an approach intending to delineate ...
