Visual Chess Recognition

چکیده
In this paper, we correctly detect and identify a chessboard and the configuration of its pieces through the application of image processing. While more technically challenging, the use of image processing to detect and identify a chessboard and the configuration of its pieces avoids the need for a digital chess set. Furthermore, image-based detection of chess pieces is a vital step in building chess-playing robots.

Mechanisms and neural basis of object and pattern recognition: a study with chess experts.
Comparing experts with novices offers unique insights into the functioning of cognition, based on the maximization of individual differences. Here we used this expertise approach to disentangle the mechanisms and neural basis behind two processes that contribute to everyday expertise: object and pattern recognition. We compared chess experts and novices performing chess-related and -unrelated (...

Research on expertise in visual-spatial tasks such as chess has ignored the introspective reports of top-level practitioners, overemphasized pattern recognition as the sole mechanism underlying skilled performance, and neglected the role of mental imagery in the thinking process. In addressing these limitations I propose a new theory of expertise, the “mental cartoons hypothesis,” and illustrat...
متن کاملThe neural organization of perception in chess experts.
The human visual system responds to expertise, and it has been suggested that regions that process faces also process other objects of expertise including chess boards by experts. We tested whether chess and face processing overlap in brain activity using fMRI. Chess experts and novices exhibited face selective areas, but these regions showed no selectivity to chess configurations relative to o...
متن کاملMany faces of expertise: fusiform face area in chess experts and novices.
The fusiform face area (FFA) is involved in face perception to such an extent that some claim it is a brain module for faces exclusively. The other possibility is that FFA is modulated by experience in individuation in any visual domain, not only faces. Here we test this latter FFA expertise hypothesis using the game of chess as a domain of investigation. We exploited the characteristic of ches...

The goal of the proposed project is to correctly detect and identify a chessboard and the configuration of its pieces through the application of image processing techniques. Such an algorithm could be used to automatically record a game between two players without the need for a digital chess set, which can cost hundreds of dollars. In addition, image-based detection of chess pieces is a vital ...
