Digital elevation models of the Moon from Earth-based radar interferometry

چکیده
Three-dimensional (3-D) maps of the nearside and polar regions of the Moon can be obtained with an Earth-based radar interferometer. This paper describes the theoretical background, experimental setup, and processing techniques for a sequence of observations performed with the Goldstone Solar System Radar in 1997. These data provide radar imagery and digital elevation models of the polar areas and other small regions at 100 m spatial and 50 m height resolutions. A geocoding procedure relying on the elevation measurements yields cartographically accurate products that are free of geometric distortions such as foreshortening.

Topography of the lunar poles from radar interferometry: a survey of cold trap locations.
Detailed topographic maps of the lunar poles have been obtained by Earth-based radar interferometry with the 3.5-centimeter wavelength Goldstone Solar System Radar. The interferometer provided maps 300 kilometers by 1000 kilometers of both polar regions at 150-meter spatial resolution and 50-meter height resolution. Using ray tracing, these digital elevation models were used to locate regions t...

Abstract The population growth, the development of cities, industry, agriculture, and improper use of resources especially non-renewable resources have led human beings to face the danger of running out of resources. In some cases, in addition to the above, irreversible environmental and geological hazards have occurred due to the overdrawn of resources. Over extraction of groundwater resourc...
متن کاملAlpine Digital Elevation Models from Radar Interferometry - a Generic Approach to Exploit Multiple Imaging Geometries
The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has developed rapidly in the last 10 years. This new method proofed to be operational with the global success of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission in the year 2000 and with several companies offering regional topographic mapping campaigns based on airborne InSAR today. However, the current ...
متن کاملThe TerraSAR-L Interferometric Mission Objectives
TerraSAR-L is the new imaging radar mission of the European Space Agency. The platform, based on the novel Snapdragon concept, is built around the active phase array antenna of the L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Specification of the L-SAR has been guided by careful analysis of the product requirements resulting in a robust baseline design with considerable margins. Besides having a comm...
متن کاملCan Radar Interferometry Address Commercial Applications?
This paper addresses a question often asked by industry: can radar interferometry (or InSAR or IFSAR) deliver services on a commercial and/or operational basis? To answer this question two systems based on InSAR for digital elevation model (DEM) generation are considered. One commercial system is the GeoSAR Xand P-band radar aerial mapping system from EarthData. The X-band can deliver digital s...
