چکیده

A new method to reconstruct the instantaneous convection pattern in the Earth's polar ionosphere is suggested. Plasma convection in the polar cap ionosphere is described as a hydrodynamic incompressible ̄ow. This description is valid in the region where the electric currents are ®eld aligned (and hence, the Lorentz body force vanishes). The problem becomes two-dimensional, and may be described by means of stream function. The ̄ow pattern may be found as a solution of the boundary value problem for stream function. Boundary conditions should be provided by measurements of the electric ®eld or plasma velocity vectors along the satellite orbits. It is shown that the convection pattern may be reconstructed with a reasonable accuracy by means of this method, by using only the minimum number of satellite crossings of the polar cap. The method enables us to obtain a reasonable estimate of the convection pattern without knowledge of the ionospheric conductivity.

A statistical study of magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling in the Lyon–Fedder–Mobarry global MHD model

The statistics of magnetosphere–ionosphere (MI) coupling derived from a two-month long run of the Lyon–Fedder–Mobarry (LFM) global simulation model are investigated. MI coupling characteristics such as polar cap potential and field-aligned current (FAC), downward Poynting flux and vorticity of ionospheric convection are compared with observed statistical averages and with results from the Weime...

Statistical study of the effect of ULF fluctuations in the IMF on the cross polar cap potential drop for northward IMF

[1] Recent studies showed that, regardless of the orientation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF), ULF wave activity in the solar wind can substantially enhance the convection in the high latitude ionosphere, suggesting that ULF fluctuations may also be an important contributor to the coupling of the solar wind to the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system. We conduct a statistical study to und...

MHD simulations of the response of high-latitude potential patterns and polar cap boundaries to sudden southward turnings of the interplanetary magnetic field

3-D MHD simulations were used to investigate the behavior of the high-latitude convection and the polar cap variations during two events characterized by sudden southward IMF turnings. In agreement with recent observations the simulation results indicate that the convection pattern across the entire polar cap begins to change a few minutes after the arrival of the southward IMF. In contrast, th...

High latitude convection based on long-term incoherent scatter radar observations in North America

High latitude ionospheric convection patterns and models are obtained based on a composite analysis of incoherent scatter radar (ISR) observations in the North America sector at Millstone Hill and Sondrestrom (MHS). These observations span a combined latitude range of 55 pLp82 over time periods starting from 1978 for Millstone Hill and from 1995 for Sondrestrom. These models, regional to the Am...

Spatial structure of summertime ionospheric plasma near magnetic noon

Results are presented from a multi-instrument study of the spatial distribution of the summertime, polar ionospheric electron density under conditions of relatively stable IMF Bz<0. The EISCAT Svalbard radar revealed a region of enhanced densities near magnetic noon that, when comparing radar scans from different local times, appeared to be spatially confined in longitude. This was identified a...
