Lunar Base as a Precursor to Mars Exploration and Settlement

چکیده

Debates over strategy for human exploration of the solar system focus on whether the next interplanetary travelers ought to go to the Moon or to Mars. The Space Exploration Initiative explicitly calls for a lunar presence, but the "Mars Now" advocates argue for a token effort on the Moon with major emphasis on Mars. A strategy which moves directly to piloted Mars missions incurs serious programmatic risks from (1) our current lack of knowledge on human performance on long-duration deep space missions, (2) our lack of experience designing manned space systems which must remain troublefree for years without refurbishment, (3) our lack of experience with complex on-orbit operations, and (4) the political instability of the funding process. A well planned program of human exploration of the Moon would provide a context within which to increase our capabilities and experience to levels required for Mars exploration.

In Situ Biological Contamination Studies of the Moon; Implications for Planetary Protection and Life Detection Missions

?abstract NASA and ESA have outlined visions for solar system exploration that will include a series of lunar robotic precursor missions to prepare for, and support a human return to the Moan, and future human exploration of Mars and other destinations, including possibly asteroids. One of the guiding principles for exploration is to pursue compelling scientific questions about the origin and e...

Synthetic biology meets bioprinting: enabling technologies for humans on Mars (and Earth)

Human exploration off planet is severely limited by the cost of launching materials into space and by re-supply. Thus materials brought from Earth must be light, stable and reliable at destination. Using traditional approaches, a lunar or Mars base would require either transporting a hefty store of metals or heavy manufacturing equipment and construction materials for in situ extraction; both w...

Meditations on the new space vision: the Moon as a stepping stone to Mars.

The Vision for Space Exploration invokes activities on the Moon in preparation for exploration of Mars and also directs International Space Station (ISS) research toward the same goal. Lunar missions will emphasize development of capability and concomitant reduction of risk for future exploration of Mars. Earlier papers identified three critical issues related to the so-called NASA Mars Design ...

Human-Robot Collaboration in a Planetary Settlement Setup: Collaborative Work, Interactions Design and Human Factors

Since the NASA space exploration roadmap has been oriented toward the “back to the Moon” paradigm in 2004, most space agencies (and ESA in particular) consider the Moon as the very likely next destination for human exploration of the solar system (Mars being obviously in line of sight). Planetary exploration endeavors in the solar system rely more and more on robotic tools and platforms, as pre...

Mars Dust Micromechanics: Mer Marsdial and Laboratory Observations

Introduction: In future human exploration of Mars, many challenges face us. Mars is a dusty planet and dust and windblown particulates will present one of the most significant difficulties [1]. The dust and granular regolith will challenge materials, machines, and people. Our experience with dust-covered astronauts on the Moon and with landers and rovers on Mars suggests that significant effort...
