چکیده

The causes of natural variation in alkalinity in the North Pacific surface ocean need to be investigated to understand the carbon cycle and to improve predictive algorithms. We used GLODAPv2 to test hypotheses on the causes of three longitudinal phenomena in Alk*, a tracer of calcium carbonate cycling. Thesephenomenaare (a)an increase fromeast towestbetween45°Nand55°N, (b) an increase fromwest toeast between25°N and40°N, and (c) aminor increase fromwest to east in the equatorial upwelling region. Between 45°N and 55°N, Alk* is higher on the western than on the eastern side, and this is associated with denser isopycnals with higher Alk* lying at shallower depths. Between 25°N and 40°N, upwelling along the North American continental shelf causes higher Alk* in the east. Along the equator, a strong east-west trendwas not observed, even though the upwelling on the eastern side of the basin is more intense, because the water brought to the surface is not high in Alk*. We created two algorithms to predict alkalinity, one for the entire Pacific Ocean north of 30°S and one for the easternmargin. The Pacific Ocean algorithm is more accurate than thecommonlyusedalgorithmpublishedbyLeeetal. (2006), of similaraccuracy to thebestpreviouslypublished algorithm by Sasse et al. (2013), and is less biased with longitude than other algorithms in the subpolar North Pacific. Our eastern margin algorithm is more accurate than previously published algorithms.

The Inorganic Carbon System and Nutrient Cycling in the Equatorial North Pacific: A study of the interactions between oceanographic features and seawater chemistry

The world’s oceans are an extremely important component of the global carbon cycle. As anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions become a growing concern, increasing our understanding of the oceanic carbon system will be a key factor in projecting the affects of global climate change and the ability of the oceans to regulate increases in atmospheric CO2. Extensive progress in this area has been ma...

Can sediment data be used to predict alkalinity and base cation chemistry of surface waters?

We hypothesise that stream sediment elemental composition can predict mean and minimum concentrations of alkalinity, Ca and Mg in the river water throughout a river network. We tested this hypothesis for the River Derwent catchment in North Yorkshire, England, by using 6 years of water chemistry data from the Environment Agency and a digital elevation model to flow path-weight British Geologica...

Longitudinal Discriminant Analysis with Random Effects for Predicting Preeclampsia using Hematocrit Data

Background and Objectives: Preeclampsia is the third leading cause of death in pregnant women. This study was conducted to evaluate the ability of longitudinal hematocrit data to predict preeclampsia and to compare the accuracy in longitudinal and cross-sectional data. Materials and Methods: In a prospective cohort study from October 2010 to July 2011, 650 pregnant women referred to the prenata...

In this paper proposes a fuzzy multi-objective hybrid Genetic and Bee colony optimization algorithm(GA-BCO) to find the optimal restoration of loads of power distribution network under fault.Restoration of distribution systems is a complex combinatorial optimization problem that should beefficiently restored in reasonable time. To improve the efficiency of restoration and facilitate theactivity...

Processes determining the marine alkalinity and calcium carbonate saturation state distributions

We introduce a composite tracer for the marine system, Alk, that has a global distribution primarily determined by CaCO3 precipitation and dissolution. Alk ∗ is also affected by riverine alkalinity from dissolved terrestrial carbonate minerals. We estimate that the Arctic receives approximately twice the riverine alkalinity per unit area as the Atlantic, and 8 times that of the other oceans. Ri...
