Distance and mass of pulsating stars from multicolour photometry and atmospheric models

چکیده

For determining distance and mass of pulsating stars a new, purely photometric method is described in which radial velocity observations are not needed. From multicolour photometry the variation of angular diameter is determined in a conventional way by using the surface brightness of the theoretical atmospheric models ATLAS of Kurucz (1997). As a function of phase the following two parameters are introduced in the Navier-Stokes equation: gravity (of the appropriate static ATLAS model), and angular diameter. Distance and mass are derived from phases of standstill. Conclusions are drawn on the hydrodynamic behaviour of the atmosphere. The new method is compared with the Baade-Wesselink (BW) method. As an example the RR Lyrae variable SU Dra is given: using UBV RC photometry, a distance of 647± 16pc, and a mass of 0.66± .03M⊙ were found. In addition to the radius change (4.58 − 5.51)R⊙ radius undulations have been found with amplitude ≈ 0.2R⊙ and period P/5, which are synchronized with the main period P = 0. 66042. The present method has confirmed the distance value from the BW method; thus, in the problem of different distance scales from BW and other methods the short extragalactic distance scale has been bolstered by an independent argument. The mass is some 30 percent larger than the value from the equation of pulsation of van Albada & Baker (1971).

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Multicolour photometry of Balloon 090100001: linking the two classes of pulsating hot subdwarfs

We present results of the multicolour UBV R photometry of the high-amplitude EC 14026type star, Balloon 090100001. The data span over a month and consist of more than a hundred hours of observations. Fourier analysis of these data led us to the detection of at least 30 modes of pulsation of which 22 are independent. The frequencies of 13 detected modes group in three narrow ranges, around 2.8, ...

0 PG 2131 + 066 : A Test of Pre - White Dwarf Asteroseismology

PG 2131+066 is a composite–spectrum binary with a hot pulsating PG 1159-type pre–white dwarf and an early M-type main sequence star. Analysis of Whole Earth Telescope observations of the pulsating pre-white dwarf component provided an asteroseismological determination of its mass, luminosity, and effective temperature. These determinations allowed Kawaler et al. (1995) to determine the distance...

Pulsating Pre-main Sequence Stars in Ic 4996 and Ngc 6530

Asteroseismology of pulsating pre-main sequence (PMS) stars has the potential of testing the validity of current models of PMS structure and evolution. As a first step, a sufficiently large sample of pulsating PMS stars has to be established, which allows to select candidates optimally suited for a detailed asteroseismological analysis based on photometry from space or ground based network data.

The Gaia mission Pulsating stars with Gaia

Gaia is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) selected in 2000, with a target launch date of 2011. The Gaia mission will perform a survey of about 1 billion sources brighter than V = 20. Its goal is to provide astrometry leading to parallaxes, proper-motions and positions. Astrometric data are complemented by multicolour photometry and a spectroscopic instrument (up to V = 17...
