چکیده

There is reason to suspect that 4C 41.17, a radio galaxy at z = 3:800 0:003, contains a large quantity of enriched molecular gas. We describe a search for CO in 4C 41.17, taking advantage of the fact that the J = 1 ! 0 rotational transition is redshifted into the radio-frequency band centred at 23 GHz for 3:80 < z < 4:25. There is no sign of CO line emission in our resulting spectrum, which covers 2000kms ?1 (or 3:785 < z < 3:821), nor in the 78-kms ?1-wide channel maps. Our upper limit for the integrated line intensity is S l < 0:17Jy kms ?1 , for a line width of 500 kms ?1. Naively assuming a Galactic conversion factor, this places a limit of around 4 10 11 M on the mass of molecular hydrogen, which is similar to the stellar mass of a present-day giant galaxy, and consistent with gas-to-dust ratios as high as 4400.

Dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies

This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...

A sensitive search for CO J = 1 – 0 emission in 4 C 41 . 17 : high - excitation molecular gas at z = 3 . 8

We report sensitive imaging observations of the CO J=1–0 line emission in the powerful high-redshift radio galaxy 4C 41.17 (z = 3.8) with the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA), conducted in order to detect the large concomitant H2 gas reservoir recently unveiled in this system by De Breuck et al. (2005) via the emission of the high excitation J=4–3 line. Our observations fail to detect the J=1–0 line...

Molecular Gas in the Z=2.565 Submillimeter Galaxy Smm J14011+0252

We report the detection of CO(3→2) emission from the submillimeter–selected luminous galaxy SMMJ14011+0252. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a merger system with spectral characteristics consistent with a starburst at z = 2.565. The CO emission confirms the optical identification of the submillimeter source and implies a molecular gas mass of 5×1010h 75...

CO Emission in Powerful Radio Galaxies at Low and High Redshift

CO observations of 0 < z < 4 radio galaxies are presented. The LCO upper limits for the high-redshift powerful radio galaxies (HzPRGs: z > 1, P408MHz > 10 27 Watts Hz) are consistent with no evolution in molecular gas (H2) mass with redshift and/or radio power. Of the lowredshift powerful radio galaxies (LzPRGs: z < 0.2, P408MHz > 10 23.5 W Hz) observed, only one F-R II galaxy has been detected...

HCN Observations of Dense Star-Forming Gas in High Redshift Galaxies

We present here the sensitive HCN(1-0) observations made with the VLA of two submillimeter galaxies and two QSOs at high-redshift. HCN emission is the signature of dense molecular gas found in GMC cores, the actual sites of massive star formation. We have made the first detection of HCN in a submillimeter galaxy, SMM J16359+6612. The HCN emission is seen with a signal to noise ratio of 4σ and a...
