Galactose tolerance test of liver function in pulmonary heart disease.

چکیده

A study of the liver function in pulmonary heart disease (Thomas, Rees, and Saunders, 1965) suggested that galactose was not metabolized normally by the liver, and so the galactose tolerance test was frequently abnormal. The results suggested that the galactose tolerance test could be abnormal before signs of clinical heart failure appeared. It seemed either that hypoxia was a factor causing disordered liver function or that hepatic congestion was present in advance of the other signs of cardiac failure. The earlier work further suggested that the galactose tolerance test was abnormal in chronic bronchitis without clinical heart failure. There was some support for this latter suggestion in an earlier observation that a palpable tender liver margin could be present in chronic pulmonary disease without other signs of congestive heart failure (Thomas, 1948). To study this problem further the galactose tolerance has been measured in 50 patients with chronic bronchitis and 25 patients with asthma. Lung fimction tests and electrocardiograms were recorded in all, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in most, and right heart pressures in 19 patients. Galactose enzyme studies have been made in 38 patients.

Liver function in pulmonary heart disease.

It is well recognized that some liver function tests are abnormal in heart failure (Jolliffe, 1930; Felder, Mund, and Parker, 1950; Sherlock, 1951; White et al., 1955; Cantarow and Trumper, 1962). Richman, Delman, and Grob (1961) described alterations in indices of liver function in congestive heart failure with particular reference to serum enzymes and drew attention to the increased frequency...

Studies on galactose tolerance test in patients with liver disease.

Oral galactose tolerance tests were performed on 56 patients with liver disease, 31 with diabetes mellitus and 17 normal subjects. Intravenous galactose tolerance tests were done on 25 liver disease, 6 diabetes mellitus and 6 normal subjects. Each liver disease was histologically comfirmed by needle biopsy under laparoscopy. Serum galactose and glucose were measured gaschromatographically. Oral...

Right ventricular Hemodynamic Alteration after Pulmonary Valve Replacement in Children with Congenital Heart Disease

Introduction:  In patients who underwent surgery to repair Tetralogy of Fallot, right ventricular dilation from pulmonary regurgitation may be result in right ventricular failure, arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. Hence, pulmonary valve replacement may be necessary to reduce right ventricular volume overload. The aim of present study was to assess the effects of pulmonary valve replacement on rig...

Effects of Pentoxifylline on Oxygenation and Exercise Tolerance in Patients with Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Background: It was hypothesized that the use of Pentoxifylline would increase arterial O2 saturation and increase exercise tolerance in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Methods: We tested this hypothesis in 23 patients with COPD and pulmonary hypertension. Patients were randomized to receive Pentoxifylline or placebo, each for a 12-week period, in a prospectiv...

Some Observations on the Metabolism

For many years clinical interest in D-galactose centered about the usefulness of galactose tolerance tests in the diagnosis of impaired liver function. Several investigators, employing an intravenous galactose tolerance test, have reported their results (1-3). The monograph by Stenstam (4) is perhaps the most extensive analysis of both the oral and intravenous tolerance test yet reported. In al...
