Comparison of Streptococcus uberis and S. infrequens. Pathogenicity for cow udder.
نویسنده
چکیده
The pathogenicity of Streptococcus uberis and S. infrequens for cow udder was compared by experimental intramammary inoculation, mostly during the dry period. There were no significant differences between the two species according to the number and the length of infections at the subsequent lactation (Table 1). No infections could be established in lactation. The pathogenic and taxonomic implications of these results are discussed.

The prophylactic effect of a dry-cow antibiotic against Streptococcus uberis.
The prophylactic use of a dry-cow antibiotic for reducing the incidence of mastitis due to Streptococcus uberis was studied in four seasonally calving dairy herds involving 378 cows. The treatment was a long-acting dry-cow antibiotic preparation administered immediately after the last milking of lactation. New intramammary infections were identified by comparing the bacteriological status of qu...
متن کاملIdentification of a differentially expressed oligopeptide binding protein (OppA2) in Streptococcus uberis by representational difference analysis of cDNA.
Streptococcus uberis is an increasingly significant cause of intramammary infection in the dairy cow, presently responsible for approximately 33% of all cases of bovine mastitis in the United Kingdom. Following experimentally induced infection of the lactating mammary gland, S. uberis is found predominantly in the luminal areas of secretory alveoli and ductular tissue, indicating that much of t...
متن کاملMastitis in Dairy Cows Genotypes, Spread, and Infection Outcome of Three Important Udder Pathogens
Mastitis, inflammation of the udder, is a common disease among dairy cows worldwide. This thesis investigated the genotype variation and spread of three major udder pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and Streptococcus uberis. Isolates collected in a previous study of veterinary-treated clinical mastitis (VTCM) were used to study between-herd genotype variation in epid...
متن کاملTrends in udder health and emerging mastitogenic pathogens in South African dairy herds.
The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyse the results of milk samples obtained from South African dairy herds during the period 1996 to April 2007 in order to identify possible trends in isolates of microorganisms and their pathogenicity under field conditions. Milk samples were obtained from 7 of the 9 provinces in South Africa where there are low numbers of dairy cows. Although the...
متن کاملUse of partial budgeting to determine the economic benefits of antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae.
The economic effect of lactational antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical intramammary infections due to Streptococcus uberis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae was explored by means of partial budgeting. Effects at cow level and herd level were modelled, including prevention of clinical mastitis episodes and the prevention of transmission of infections. Input variables for our deterministic mo...
