Forest Structure Estimation Using Space Borne Polarimetric Radar: an Alos-palsar Case Study

چکیده
Here we investigate the potential use of ALOS PALSAR L-band dual and quad polarization SAR data for improved forest structure mapping and parameter estimation. Several scenes of level 1.1 SLC data have been acquired under the DRAGON project in 2007 for the Tai-An test site of Shandong Province, P.R. China. The preliminary results for the first phase of this project are reported here. Firstly, the geo-coding method and its geo-location accuracy are evaluated with one geo-coded Landsat ETM as reference. Secondly, a high resolution DEM is used for implementing GTC processing. The benefits and limitations of GTC for forest mapping are evaluated with a SPOT5 image. Thirdly, various entropyalpha polarimetric segmentation methods are evaluated for forest classification. Finally, interferometric coherence images are generated to investigate the possibility of studying polarimetric interferometry based forest structure information extraction methods.

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) was successfully launched on Jan. 24, 2006, from Tanegashima Space Center, Japan. The objectives of ALOS are [1]: (1) to provide maps for Japan and other countries including Asia-Pacific region (Cartography), (2) to perform regional observation for "sustainable development", harmonization between Earth environment and development (Regional Observatio...
متن کاملInvestigation of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness using Space-borne Polarimetric SAR data
Space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been widely used to produce ice concentration (type), ice motion, ice charting (operational route planning), and iceberg detection. Recent availability of polarimetric SAR sensors (e.g., TerraSAR-X, RADARSAT-2, and ALOS PALSAR) enables us to explore the full potential of polarimetric data to derive sea ice information. Among the many sea ice ...
متن کاملMapping Coastal Wetlands Using Polarimetric Alos Palsar Data in North Carolina
The purpose of this study is to map wetlands using multi-polarimetric and polarimetric analysis of ALOS Palsar data in coastal North Carolina. Radar sensor offers reliable acquisition of wetlands which are mandated, by Congress, to be mapped every ten years. Radar data products were generated using Wishart supervised (HH-HVVV) and Wishart unsupervised (entropy and dominant scattering mechanism)...

The main objective of this research is to investigate the potential combination of Sentinel-2A and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 (Advanced Land Observing Satellite -2 Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2) imagery for improving the accuracy of the Aboveground Biomass (AGB) measurement. According to the current literature, this kind of investigation has rarely been conducted. The Hyrcanian fores...
متن کاملInitial Polarimetric Calibration of PALSAR
This paper discusses an initial polarimetric calibration of ALOS PALSAR. ALOS was launched on January 24, 2006. PALSAR, which is one of ALOS three sensors, is the first spaceborne L−band polarimetric synthetic aperture radar. It is expected that PALSAR polarimetric data is used for many applications such as agriculture, forestry, ocean, natural disasters etc. Thus, polarimetric calibration is a...
