Stable self-guided propagation of two optical harmonics coupled by a microwave or a terahertz wave

چکیده
We propose a new scheme for self-trapping of (2 1 1)-dimensional optical beams: parametric interaction between self-guided waves of optical and microwave (or terahertz) frequencies, which relies on the combination of optical rectification and the electro-optic effect in a bulk noncentrosymmetric medium. We show that, in spite of strong domination of quasi-cubic terms, quadratic nonlinearity provides an effective stabilization mechanism to prevent collapse in a large range of parameters where three-wave solitons exist. © 2000 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(00)00412-4] OCIS codes: 190.4410, 190.5940.

Specialty Fibers for Terahertz Generation and Transmission: A Review (Invited)
Terahertz (THz) frequency range, lying between the optical and microwave range covers a significant portion of the electro-magnetic spectrum. Though its initial usage started in the 1960s, active research in the THz field started only in the 1990s by researchers from both optics and microwaves disciplines. The use of optical fibers for THz application has attracted considerable attention in rec...
متن کاملOptical Theorem for Transmission Lines
We present the application to transmission line systems of a new theory of the optical theorem that describes the energy budget of electromagnetic scattering in lossless wave propagation media. The insight gained by exploring this, simplest of the electromagnetic wave propagation systems from the point of view of the optical theorem, is important for understanding power budget of electromagneti...
متن کاملGuided propagation of terahertz pulses on metal wires
We demonstrate a new waveguiding structure for terahertz (THz) radiation in which broadband THz pulses are confined and guided along a bare metal wire. The propagation of THz pulses on such a waveguide is characterized with a fiber-coupled terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system. Free-space THz radiation is coupled onto the waveguide at different positions along the wire, and spatially resolv...
متن کاملPropagation effects in apertureless near-field optical antennas
We report a direct observation of the electromagnetic wave propagation on optical antennas. A free-space broadband terahertz pulse is coupled into a propagating mode along the shaft of an optical antenna acting as an apertureless near-field probe. We determine the spatial extent of this guided mode and its velocity. In addition, we consider the possibility of multiply reflected modes propagatin...
متن کاملPropagation of Incoherently Coupled Soliton Pairs in Photorefractive Crystals and their Self-Deflection
Propagation of incoherently soliton pairs in photorefractive crystals under steady-state conditions is studied. These soliton states can be generated when the two mutually incoherent optical beams with the same polarization and wavelength incident on the biased photorefractive crystal. Such soliton pairs can exist in bright-bright, dark-dark, gray-gray as well as in bright-dark types. In this p...
