Source(s) and cycling of the nonhydrolyzable organic fraction of oceanic particles

چکیده
A major fraction of particulate organic carbon (POC) in the deep ocean remains molecularly uncharacterized. In an effort to determine the chemical characteristics and source(s) of sinking POC, we studied a nonhydrolyzable fraction of sinking POC using C NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy and analytical pyrolysis. C NMR spectra and products from analytical pyrolysis of the nonhydrolyzable fraction exhibit a strongly aliphatic character that is distinct from that of bulk POC. The aliphatic nature of this fraction is consistent with its low stable carbon isotope values. We hypothesize that the nonhydrolyzable fraction derives to a significant extent from a refractory component of organisms that selectively accumulates, resulting in its manifestation as a major part of POC sinking to the deep ocean and in underlying sediments. 2006 Elsevier Inc. Carbon isotope ratios of organic compound fractions in oceanic suspended particles
[1] To study cycling of organic fractions in the ocean, relative abundances and radioand stable-carbon isotope measurements of total lipid extract, acid-soluble, and acidinsoluble fractions of suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) were made. Changes in relative abundances occurred mostly in the upper 1000 m of the water column, with a decrease in total lipid extract and the acid-soluble fr...

متن کاملAn Experimental Investigation on Fracture Analysis of Polymer Matrix Composite under Different Thermal Cycling Conditions
Fracture analysis of glass/epoxy composites under different thermal cycling conditions is considered. Temperature difference, stacking sequence, fiber volume fraction and number of thermal cycles are selected as the experimental design factors. The Taguchi method is implemented to design of the experiment and an apparatus is developed for automatic thermal cycling tests. The tensile tests are d...
متن کاملSurface Degradation of Polymer Matrix Composites Under Different Low Thermal Cycling Conditions
The principal effects of mass degradation on polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are the decay of mechanical properties such as strength, elongation, and resilience. This degradation is a common problem of the PMCs under thermal cycling conditions. In this article, composite degradation was investigated by measurement of total mass loss (TML) using the Taguchi approach. Thermal cycling tests were ...
