چکیده

In this paper we consider the joint performance of fountain codes and 802.11a/g PHY modulation/coding. We consider optimality both in terms of maximizing goodput and minimizing energy, and results are presented for both theoretical and experimental channel models. In contrast to studies in cellular networks, we find that in 802.11a/g WLANs the cross-layer approach of a higher-layer fountain coding with a PHY layer modulation and FEC coding can yield very limited gains, and the PHY modulation/rate that optimizes the uncoded multicast performance is also close to that for fountain-coded multicast traffic over a wide-range of network conditions. This is potentially an important observation as it indicates that in 802.11a/g WLANs cross-layer design for multicast rate control would bring few benefits and PHY layer rate control can be carried out without regard to the use of fountain coding at higher layers. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Coding in 802.11 WLANs

Forward error correction (FEC) coding is widely used in communication systems to correct transmission errors. In IEEE 802.11a/g transmitters, convolutional codes are used for FEC at the physical (PHY) layer. As is typical in wireless systems, only a limited choice of pre-specified coding rates is supported. These are implemented in hardware and thus difficult to change, and the coding rates are...

Energy-efficient PCF operation of IEEE 802.11a WLANs via transmit power control

Transmit power control (TPC) has been recognized as one of the effective ways to save energy in wireless devices. In this paper, we demonstrate the energy-efficient point coordination function (PCF) operation of IEEE 802.11a wireless local-area networks (WLANs) via TPC and physical layer (PHY) rate adaptation. The basic idea is that the best transmit power level as well as the proper PHY rate a...

Impact of IEEE 802.11n/ac PHY/MAC High Throughput Enhancements over Transport/Application Layer Protocols - A Survey

Since the inception of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) in the year 1997, it has tremendously grown in the last few years. IEEE 802.11 is popularly known as WLAN. To provide the last mile wireless broadband connectivity to users, IEEE 802.11 is enriched with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g. More recently, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac and IEEE 802.11ad are introduced with enhancem...

Energy-Efficient PCF Operation of IEEE 802.11a Wireless LAN

In this paper, we demonstrate the energy-efficient Point Coordination Function (PCF) operation of IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN (WLAN) via both transmit power control (TPC) and physical layer (PHY) rate adaptation. First, we derive the energy-consumption performance analytically for uplink data transmissions under the PCF. From the evaluation results, we observe that significant energy savings can ...

IEEE 802.11 WLANs: Performance analysis in presence of bit errors

IEEE 802.11 is worldwide established and the most used protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). As the assumption of an error-free channel is not always true in a realistic environment, we extent a mathematical model previously presented in the literature that calculates IEEE 802.11 DCF performance to take into account transmission errors for the IEEE 802.11a protocol. Our results tak...
