20.2 Southern Pines in Bioenergy Production 20 Pines

چکیده
(ed. B.P. Singh) 427 pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii). Of note, the former two are also considered to be species of concern for conservation (Erickson et al., 2012) due to long-standing land management practices that have favoured loblolly pine. Similarly to loblolly pine, although on a smaller scale, slash pine has been widely planted and managed for wood and fibre production. Because of this, slash pine could be an important component of southern pine production for bioenergy purposes, sharing many similar features in this respect to loblolly pine. However, for the purpose of this chapter we will focus our discussion on loblolly pine and consider the general features and properties in bioenergy production, genetics and breeding for bioenergy traits, silvicultural practices for bioenergy production, tree harvesting and chip processing, bioenergy opportunities and challenges, and sustainability of bioenergy production systems. Socio-economic analyses and their implications are critical for the whole system but are beyond the scope of this chapter.

Suitability of some southern and western pines as hosts for the pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda (Coleoptera: Scolytidae).
The pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda (L.), is an exotic pest that has become established in North America. Discovered in Ohio in 1992, it has since been found in at least 13 states and parts of Canada. The beetle can cause significant growth loss in pines, and it represents a potential threat to trees in areas where it has not yet become established. To evaluate this threat to native pines,...
متن کاملSilvicultural Considerations in Managing Southern Pine Stands in the Context of Southern Pine Beetle
Roughly 30 percent of the 200 million acres of forest land in the South supports stands dominated by southern pines. These are among the most productive forests in the nation. Adapted to disturbance, southern pines are relatively easy to manage with even-aged methods such as clearcutting and planting, or the seed tree and shelterwood methods with natural regeneration. In addition, most species ...

The invasive Mediterranean pine engraver, Orthotomicus erosus (Wollaston) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), was detected in North America in 2004, and it is currently distributed in the southern Central Valley of California. It originates from the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, and Asia, and it reproduces on pines (Pinus spp.). To identify potentially vulnerable native and adventive hosts in No...
متن کاملIdeotype Development in Southern Pines: Rationale and Strategies for Overcoming Scale-Related Obstacles
Indirect genetic selection for early growth and disease resistance of southern pines has proven remarkably successful over the past several decades. However, several benefits could be derived for southern pine breeding programs by incorporating ideotypes, conceptual models which explicitly describe plant phenotypic characteristics that are hypothesized to produce greater yield. The potential be...
