Computer generation of puns in Japanese
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have implemented a simple model of puns in a program (BOKE) which generates puns in Japanese, using linguistic information from a general–purpose lexicon. Our evaluation indicates that the puns generated by the program are of comparable quality to those generated by humans. BOKE differs from an earlier English-language system (JAPE) only in the lexicon and the templates used to generate the surface text — the punning mechanisms are the same. This suggests that our model of puns is language independent.

Automatically Extracting Word Relationships as Templates for Pun Generation
Computational models can be built to capture the syntactic structures and semantic patterns of human punning riddles. This model is then used as rules by a computer to generate its own puns. This paper presents T-PEG, a system that utilizes phonetic and semantic linguistic resources to automatically extract word relationships in puns and store the knowledge in template form. Given a set of trai...
متن کاملJapanese Puns Are Not Necessarily Jokes
In English, “puns” are usually perceived as a subclass of “jokes”. In Japanese, however, this is not necessarily true. In this paper we investigate whether Japanese native speakers perceive dajare (puns) as jooku (jokes). We first summarize existing research in the field of computational humor, both in English and Japanese, focusing on the usage of these two terms. This shows that in works of J...
متن کاملPuns in Japanese Computer Mediated Communication: Observations from Misconversion Phenomena
This study extends humor theory to explain puns originating from orthographic conversion in Japanese computermediated communication (CMC). Standard word-processing software converts Romanized input to appropriate orthographic output consisting of phono-graphic kana and ideographic kanji. Such software may produce an output often semantically incongruent with the intended output, which can be hu...
متن کاملAutomatically Extracting Templates from Examples for NLP Tasks
In this paper, we present the approaches used by our NLP systems to automatically extract templates for example-based machine translation and pun generation. Our translation system is able to extract an average of 73.25% correct translation templates, resulting in a translation quality that has a low word error rate of 18% when the test document contains sentence patterns matching the training ...
متن کاملComputational Mechanisms for Pun Generation
Computer pun-generators have so far relied on arbitrary semantic content, not linked to the immediate context. The mechanisms used, although tractable, may be of limited applicability. Integrating puns into normal text may involve complex search.
