Holistic Thinking and How It Can Produce Innova- tive Solutions to Difficult Problems

چکیده
Systems thinking and innovation are deemed as required characteristic of systems engineers. This paper is written as the latest in a series of readings on systems thinking and innovation for postgraduate courses teaching systems engineering. The first part of the paper refers to earlier work in systems thinking and shows a difference between systems thinking and critical thinking, defines holistic thinking as a combination of analysis, systems thinking and critical thinking and shows that causal loops are tools used in critical thinking rather than elements of systems thinking. The second part of the paper provides examples of how holistic thinking resulted in innovative solutions to difficult problems in very different situations. The contribution of the paper is the definition of holistic thinking and the examples of how holistic thinking produced innovative solutions to difficult problems.

The influence of using Gilles Deleuze's poststructuralist thoughts in improving educational space
This studychr('39')s primary purpose is the influence of Gilles Deleuzechr('39')s poststructuralist thinking on improving the quality of educational space. Therefore, this study seeks to answer two main questions; first, the difference between rhizomatic education and the tree model of education. Second, how can rhizomatic thinking be effective in improving the educational environmentchr('39')s...
متن کاملWhat Can Policy-Makers Get Out of Systems Thinking? Policy Partners’ Experiences of a Systems-Focused Research Collaboration in Preventive Health
Background There is increasing interest in using systems thinking to tackle ‘wicked’ policy problems in preventive health, but this can be challenging for policy-makers because the literature is amorphous and often highly theoretical. Little is known about how best to support health policy-makers to gain skills in understanding and applying systems thinking for policy action. <br /...
متن کاملBringing Classroom-Based Assessment into the EFL classroom
This paper describes how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers can bring reliable, valid, user-friendly assessment into their classrooms, and thus improve the quality of learning that occurs there. Based on the experience of the author as a an EFL teacher and teacher-trainer, it is suggested that the promotion and development of autonomy, intrinsic motivation...
متن کاملA generalized implicit enumeration algorithm for a class of integer nonlinear programming problems
Presented here is a generalization of the implicit enumeration algorithm that can be applied when the objec-tive function is being maximized and can be rewritten as the difference of two non-decreasing functions. Also developed is a computational algorithm, named linear speedup, to use whatever explicit linear constraints are present to speedup the search for a solution. The method is easy to u...
متن کاملApplying Systems Thinking to Examine and Reduce Dependency on Food Banks
Systems thinking is the art of understanding interconnections between various disciplines thereby unwinding the existing complexity. Most of the real world problems are complex, take for the example the increasing dependency rate on food banks. While various factors contribute towards it, not much has been done to bring the take off the number of dependents. By viewing this system from a holist...
