Conserving Ocean Biodiversity: Trends and Challenges
نویسنده
چکیده
The ocean’s biological diversity—its genetic resources, species, and ecosystems—provides immense benefits to the United States and to all of human society. Knowledge about these resources is still rudimentary; however, trends in the best studied species and ecosystems— commercially exploited fishes, protected marine mammals and turtles, and certain coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs— indicate that these resources and their benefits are threatened by human activities both in the United States and globally. The U.S. government is already taking steps to address the threats, and actions are paying dividends in healthier resources. Recent initiatives, such as the President’s Executive Order on Coral Reef Protection, signal a commitment to continue to improve the state of the marine environment. The key to further progress will depend on strengthening scientific research; applying a precautionary approach to resource use; strengthening partnerships with all stakeholders; and managing marine resources on an ecosystem basis. This paper highlights the ecosystem approach and the new Aquatic Restoration and Conservation (ARC) Partnership for Marine, Estuarine and Freshwater Living Resources as parts of a conceptual framework for organizing future actions to protect marine biodiversity.1

An overview of the status, trends and challenges of freshwater fish research and conservation in Malaysia
Freshwater fish biodiversity is a precious natural asset in terms of economic, cultural and scientific interest. And yet, the inland freshwater ecosystem in Malaysia is declining at a far greater rate than terrestrial ecosystems in the tropics. What happened, and what is being done to address the crisis? This paper extracts findings from the latest literature and explores overarching issues per...
متن کاملEthnobotanical Importance of Orans - As a Means Of Conserving Biodiversity
Special sites or areas that have one or more attributes which distinguish them as somehow extraordinary, usually in a religious or spiritual sense, are called sacred places. They tend to evoke a feeling of some awesome, mysterious, and transcendent power that merits special reverence and treatment. Sacred groves are stands of trees or patches of forest that local communities conserve primarily ...
متن کاملSpatially Explicit Trends in the Global Conservation Status of Vertebrates
The world's governments have committed to preventing the extinction of threatened species and improving their conservation status by 2020. However, biodiversity is not evenly distributed across space, and neither are the drivers of its decline, and so different regions face very different challenges. Here, we quantify the contribution of regions and countries towards recent global trends in ver...
متن کاملThe Structuring Role of Marine Life in Open Ocean Habitat: Importance to International Policy
Areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) lie outside the 200 nautical mile limits of national sovereignty and cover 58% of the ocean surface. Global conservation agreements recognize biodiversity loss in ABNJ and aim to protect ≥10% of oceans in marine protected areas (MPAs) by 2020. However, limited mechanisms to create MPAs in ABNJ currently exist, and existing management is widely regarded ...
متن کاملMethods for identifying better ways to govern biodiversity
We developed a new process to identify and test options for improving governance arrangements for biodiversity conservation. Governance encapsulates the processes through which people share power and responsibilities as decisions are made: by whom, for whom, and in whose interests. These processes create the formal and informal rules that frame and direct human action, including the actions of ...
