An Information-Theoretical View of Network-Aware Malware Attacks

چکیده
This work investigates three aspects: (a) a network vulnerability as the non-uniform vulnerable-host distribution, (b) threats, i.e., intelligent malwares that exploit such a vulnerability, and (c) defense, i.e., challenges for fighting the threats. We first study five large data sets and observe consistent clustered vulnerable-host distributions. We then present a new metric, referred to as the non-uniformity factor, which quantifies the unevenness of a vulnerable-host distribution. This metric is essentially the Renyi information entropy and better characterizes the non-uniformity of a distribution than the Shannon entropy. Next, we analyze the propagation speed of networkaware malwares in view of information theory. In particular, we draw a relationship between Renyi entropies and randomized epidemic malware-scanning algorithms. We find that the infection rates of malware-scanning methods are characterized by the Renyi entropies that relate to the information bits in a nonunform vulnerable-host distribution extracted by a randomized scanning algorithm. Meanwhile, we show that a representative network-aware malware can increase the spreading speed by exactly or nearly a non-uniformity factor when compared to a random-scanning malware at an early stage of malware propagation. This quantifies that how much more rapidly the Internet can be infected at the early stage when a malware exploits an uneven vulnerable-host distribution as a networkwide vulnerability. Furthermore, we analyze the effectiveness of defense strategies on the spread of network-aware malwares. Our results demonstrate that counteracting network-aware malwares is a significant challenge for the strategies that include host-based defense and IPv6.

Anti-Taint-Analysis: Practical Evasion Techniques Against Information Flow Based Malware Defense
Taint-tracking is emerging as a general technique in software security to complement virtualization and static analysis. It has been applied for accurate detection of a wide range of attacks on benign software, as well as in malware defense. Although it is quite robust for tackling the former problem, application of taint analysis to untrusted (and potentially malicious) software is riddled wit...
متن کاملAn Inside Look at Botnets
The continued growth and diversification of the Internet has been accompanied by an increasing prevalence of attacks and intrusions [40]. It can be argued, however, that a significant change in motivation for malicious activity has taken place over the past several years: from vandalism and recognition in the hacker community, to attacks and intrusions for financial gain. This shift has been ma...
متن کاملNeedles in a Haystack: Mining Information from Public Dynamic Analysis Sandboxes for Malware Intelligence
Malware sandboxes are automated dynamic analysis systems that execute programs in a controlled environment. Within the large volumes of samples submitted every day to these services, some submissions appear to be different from others, and show interesting characteristics. For example, we observed that malware samples involved in famous targeted attacks – like the Regin APT framework or the rec...

Web-based malicious software (malware) has been increasing over the Internet .It poses threats to computer users through web sites. Computers are infected with Web-based malware by drive-by-download attacks. Drive-by-download attacks force users to download and install the Web-based malware without being aware of it .these attacks evade detection by using automatic redirections to various websi...

Malicious website attacks, including phishing, malware, and drive-by downloads have become a huge security threat to today’s Internet. Various studies have been conducted to explore approaches to prevent users from being attacked by malicious websites. However, no studies to date exist on the prevalence of and temporal characteristics of such traffic. In this paper, we developed the PhishLive s...
