CONSEQUENCES IN ARTICULATORY MODELLING Gérard Bailly, Pierre Badin & Anne Vilain Institut de la Communication Parlée INPG & Université Stendhal 46, avenue Félix Viallet, 38031 Grenoble Cedex 1, France Abstract Linear component articulatory models [9, 10, 5] are built using an iterative substraction of linear predictors of the vocal tract geometry. In this paper we consider the contribution of jaw displacement to tongue and lips movements using sets of cineradiographic data from three di erent speakers. We show that linear prediction overestimates this contribution by capturing not only the intrinsic mechanical jaw-tongue coupling but also the synergetic control observed in the corpus. We then propose a substraction of the jaw contribution which do not a ect the performance of the model in terms of data prediction.

Can tongue be recovered from face? the answer of data-driven statistical models

This study revisits the face-to-tongue articulatory inversion problem in speech. We compare the Multi Linear Regression method (MLR) with two more sophisticated methods based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs), using the same French corpus of articulatory data acquired by ElectroMagnetoGraphy. GMMs give overall results better than HMMs, but MLR does poorly. GMMs a...

Oral Motor Indexes in Iranian 4- to 9-month-old infants: A short report

Introduction: Examination of oral motor indices in infants helps treatment team members identify infants who are delayed in these indices earlier and use the order of occurrence of these indices in normal infants as a criterion for treating infants with motor delay. Literature shows that oral movement indices are different in different races, cultures, and languages. The aim of this study was t...

Computational simulation of CV combination preferences in babbling

There is a tendency for spoken consonant-vowel (CV) syllables, in babbling in particular, to show preferred combinations: labial consonants with central vowels, alveolars with front, and velars with back. This pattern was first described by MacNeilage and Davis, who found the evidence compatible with their "frame-then-content" (F/C) model. F/C postulates that CV syllables in babbling are produc...

Towards an Audiovisual Virtual Talking Head: 3d Articulatory Modeling of Tongue, Lips and Face Based on Mri and Video Images

A linear three-dimensional articulatory model of tongue, lips and face is presented. The model is based on a linear component analysis of the 3D coordinates defining the geometry of the different organs, obtained from Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the tongue, and from front and profile video images of the subject’s face marked with small beads. In addition to a common jaw height parameter, the ...

Articulatory organization of mandibular, labial, and velar movements during speech.

It has been shown that articulator movements during speech are adjusted along a number of spatiotemporal dimensions. For example, variations in the extent of lip, jaw, or tongue motion are associated with proportional changes in the respective articulators' peak velocity. Modifications in the timing of lip and jaw actions are apparently constrained, exhibiting relative timing covariation. Sylla...
