Fecal carriage of multiresistant bacteria versus infection in ICU wards patients

چکیده
Introduction / objectives Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) constitute major health care problem from their frequency, cost and gravity. Fecal carriage of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates has mainly been detected in HAI, and few studies have evaluated fecal carriage during non-outbreak situations and among patients in the community. This study was undertaken to determine the spectrum of bacterial colonization and predisposing risk factors in patients being admitted to an acute care hospital, Lisboa, with special emphasis on ESBL producing Gram-negative bacteria.

The importance of colonization pressure in multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii acquisition in a Greek intensive care unit
INTRODUCTION We investigated the role of colonization pressure on multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii acquisition and defined patient-related predictors for carriage at admission and acquisition during hospitalization in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. METHODS This was a 12-month, prospective, cohort study of all patients admitted to a single ICU of a tertiary hospital. Screening sampl...
متن کاملRelevance of digestive tract colonization in the epidemiology of nosocomial infections due to multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii.
Fecal colonization with multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii was evaluated in 189 consecutive patients in intensive care units (ICUs) during two different 2-month periods (October-November 1993 and May-June 1994). Rectal swabs were obtained weekly from admission to discharge from the ICU. Overall, 77 patients (41%) had multiresistant A. baumannii fecal colonization; colonization was detected ...
متن کاملA large sustained endemic outbreak of multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa: a new epidemiological scenario for nosocomial acquisition
BACKGROUND Studies of recent hospital outbreaks caused by multiresistant P.aeruginosa (MRPA) have often failed to identify a specific environmental reservoir. We describe an outbreak due to a single clone of multiresistant (MR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance procedures and control measures applied. METHODS Patients with MRPA isolates were prospe...

OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between nurse workload and multiresistant bacteria colonization or infection (MRB+) in a neurology intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS We studied the relationship between nurse workload and MRB+ development in patients who were hospitalized in Dicle University Neurology Department ICU, Turkey during a 6-month period from November 15, 2003 to April 15, 20...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Infection Types and the Complications in Hospitalized Elders Admitted in ICU Wards
Objectives: Infections acquired in ICU wards is a major part of nosocomial infections in each hospital. Controlling this type of infections can reduce mortality and hospitalization time. An important and high-risk target group for these infections involves older adults. This study aimed to investigate the infections acquired in ICU among older adults as well as contributors to and complications...
