Inhibition of Colony-spreading Activity of Staphylococcus Aureus by Secretion of Delta-hemolysin
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: Staphylococcus aureus spreads on soft agar surfaces, a phenomenon called “colony-spreading”. Results: We purified delta-hemolysin from S. aureus culture supernatant as an inhibitor of colony-spreading, and its disrupted mutant had high colony-spreading ability. Conclusion: S. aureus negatively regulates colony-spreading by secreting delta-hemolysin. Significance: This is the first example of an endogenous molecule that inhibits bacterial self-motility.

Ascorbic acid augments colony spreading by reducing biofilm formation of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Objective(s):Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive pathogen, well known for its resistance andversatile lifestyle. Under unfavourable conditions, it adapts biofilm mode of growth. For staphylococcal biofilm formation, production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) is a pre-requisite, which is regulated by ica operon-encoded enzymes. This study was designed to know the impact of ascor...
متن کاملPurification and characterization of an immunologically distinct delta-hemolysin from a canine strain of Staphylococcus aureus.
Culture supernatants of 26 strains of Staphylococcus aureus possessing delta-hemolytic activity have been tested by immunodiffusion against a serum raised against purified delta-hemolysin from S. aureus CN 4108 (Newman D2). Supernatants from 14 strains of canine origin gave a reaction of partial identity with delta-hemolysin from CN 4108, whereas supernatants from all other strains had full ide...
متن کاملCell-Surface Phenol Soluble Modulins Regulate Staphylococcus aureus Colony Spreading
Staphylococcus aureus produces phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs), which are amphipathic small peptides with lytic activity against mammalian cells. We previously reported that PSMα1-4 stimulate S. aureus colony spreading, the phenomenon of S. aureus colony expansion on the surface of soft agar plates, whereas δ-toxin (Hld, PSMγ) inhibits colony-spreading activity. In this study, we revealed the un...
متن کاملImmunological relationship between delta-hemolysins of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative strains of staphylococci.
Delta-hemolysin of coagulase-negative staphylococcal strains was immunologically identical to delta-hemolysin of Staphylococcus aureus (Newman) but distinct from delta-hemolysin from a canine strain of S. aureus.
متن کاملEffects of Sub-Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations of Silver Nanoparticles on Some Virulence Factors of Staphylococcus aureus
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have physical and surface properties that could threaten human and environmental health. AgNPs are classified as ‘very toxic’ to eukaryotic organisms and are less toxic to bacteria. The aim of the present study was to study the effects of different sub-minimum inhi...
