چکیده

We investigate the nature of the physical structures giving rise to damped Lyα absorption systems (DLAS) at high redshift. In particular, we examine the suggestion that rapidly rotating large disks are the only viable explanation for the characteristic observed asymmetric profiles of low ionization absorption lines. Using hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation in a cosmological context we demonstrate that irregular protogalactic clumps can reproduce the observed velocity width distribution and asymmetries of the absorption profiles equally well. The velocity broadening in the simulated clumps is due to a mixture of rotation, random motions, infall and merging. The observed velocity width correlates with the virial velocity of the dark matter halo of the forming protogalactic clump (∆v ≈ 0.6 vvir for the median values, with a large scatter of order a factor two between different lines-of-sight). The typical virial velocity of the halos required to give rise to the DLAS population is about 100 km s and most standard hierarchical structure formation scenarios can easily account even for the largest observed velocity widths. We conclude that the evidence that DLAS at high redshift are related to large rapidly rotating disks with vcirc ∼> 200 km s −1 is not compelling. Ly α Cloud Size Evolution and Shape from QSO Groups

We present results from Keck HIRES, KPNO 4m/RC Spec and HST FOS spectra of a low-redshift, close QSO pair and a close, higher-redshift QSO triplet in order to explore the size evolution, shape and clustering of Ly α absorbers. The results we highlight here indicate that there is no strong evidence for evolution of Ly α cloud size with redshift, that strong (Wo > 0.4Å) Ly α forest absorbers are ...

The Formation of Galactic Disks

We study the population of galactic disks expected in current hierarchical clustering models for structure formation. A rotationally supported disk with exponential surface density proole is assumed to form with a mass and angular momentum which are xed fractions of those of its surrounding dark halo. We assume that haloes respond adiabatically to disk formation, and that only stable disks can ...

Strong Clustering of High-Redshift Lyman-alpha Forest Absorption Systems

We use new observations of very weak CIV absorption lines associated with high-redshift Ly α absorption systems to measure the high-redshift Ly α line two-point correlation function (TPCF). These very weak CIV absorption lines trace small-scale velocity structure that cannot be resolved by Ly α absorption lines. We find that (1) high-redshift Ly α absorption systems with N(H I) > 3 × 10 cm are ...

Implications of 21cm observations for damped Ly-α systems

We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope HI 21cm absorption observations, of candidate and confirmed damped Lyman-α systems. The derived spin temperatures Tspin are high, in all cases, ∼ 1000 K or higher. We have also collated from the published literature a list of damped absorbers for which 21cm observations exist, and discuss the implications of the observations for the nature of these sys...

I review current results from searching for galaxies giving rise to damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) at z < 1. Using 14 confirmed DLA galaxies, I further show that intermediate-redshift galaxies possess large H I envelope out to 24−30 h kpc radius. The photometric and spectral properties of these galaxies confirm that DLA galaxies are drawn from the typical field population, and not from a separate ...
