Synergistic convergence in congenital extraocular muscle misinnervation.

چکیده
S ynergistic divergence is a well-established clinical condition in which abduction arises on attempted adduction, leading to simultaneous abduction of both eyes on lateral gaze. Synergistic divergence can occur as an extreme form of Duane syndrome, where most if not all oculomotor nerve branch fibers originally directed to the medial rectus muscle innervate the lateral rectus muscle. Synergistic convergence is an extremely rare form of ocular motor synkinesis characterized by simultaneous adduction on lateral gaze. It has only been described once in a case of congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles. Here we describe a girl with isolated congenital synergistic convergence and discuss its probable pathophysiology.

Imaging of Cranial Nerves III, IV, VI in Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorders
Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders are a group of diseases caused by abnormal development of cranial nerve nuclei or their axonal connections, resulting in aberrant innervation of the ocular and facial musculature. Its diagnosis could be facilitated by the development of high resolution thin-section magnetic resonance imaging. The purpose of this review is to describe the method to vis...
متن کاملEvidence of an asymmetrical endophenotype in congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles type 3 resulting from TUBB3 mutations.
PURPOSE Orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to investigate the structural basis of motility abnormalities in congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 3 (CFEOM3), a disorder resulting from missense mutations in TUBB3, which encodes neuron-specific beta-tubulin isotype III. METHODS Ophthalmic examinations in 13 volunteers from four CFEOM3 pedigrees and normal control su...

PURPOSE High-resolution orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to investigate the structural basis of ocular motility abnormalities in humans with congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 1 (CFEOM1) due to missense mutations in the developmental kinesin KIF21A. METHODS Clinical ophthalmic and motility findings in 19 volunteers from six unrelated CFEOM1 pedigrees harborin...
متن کاملEffects of extraocular muscle tenotomy on congenital nystagmus in macaque monkeys.
INTRODUCTION Extraocular muscle tenotomy has been reported to damp congenital nystagmus in an achiasmatic sheepdog. We performed extraocular muscle tenotomy to evaluate its effects on congenital nystagmus in primates. METHODS Magnetic search coil eye movement recordings were used to document the presence of horizontal congenital nystagmus in 2 adult macaque monkeys that also had naturally occ...
متن کاملOculomotor nerve and muscle abnormalities in congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles.
Congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles is an autosomal dominant congenital disorder characterized by bilateral ptosis, restrictive external ophthalmoplegia with the eyes partially or completely fixed in an infraducted (downward) and strabismic position, and markedly limited and aberrant residual eye movements. It has been generally thought that these clinical abnormalities result from m...
