چکیده

The cardinal growth characteristics of Myxococcus xanthus were examined from 14 to 40 degree C, and the examinations indicated that the organism is mesophilic in character. The maximum growth rate (0,3 doublings per h) was between 34 and 36 degree C and the temperature characteristic (micron) is 17,000 cal/mol (71,162 J/mol).

Inhibition of development of Myxococcus xanthus by eukaryotic protein kinase inhibitors.

Myxococcus xanthus is a social bacterium that lives in the soil and undergoes spectacular development to form multicellular fruiting bodies. It contains a large family of eukaryote-like serine/threonine protein kinases. We found that a number of inhibitors for eukaryotic protein serine, threonine, and tyrosine kinases could inhibit the development and sporulation of M. xanthus to various degree...

The Myxococcus xanthus developmental program can be delayed by inhibition of DNA replication.

Under conditions of nutrient deprivation, Myxococcus xanthus undergoes a developmental process that results in the formation of a fruiting body containing environmentally resistant myxospores. We have shown that myxospores contain two copies of the genome, suggesting that cells must replicate the genome prior to or during development. To further investigate the role of DNA replication in develo...

Glycine betaine biosynthesized from glycine provides an osmolyte for cell growth and spore germination during osmotic stress in Myxococcus xanthus.

Glycine sarcosine methyltransferase (Gsm) and sarcosine dimethylglycine methyltransferase (Sdm) catalyze glycine betaine synthesis from glycine. Disruption of the M. xanthus gsmA (MXAN 7068) or sdmA (MXAN 3190) gene, encoding Gsm or Sdm homologue proteins, respectively, generated mutants that exhibited a longer lag period of growth and delayed spore germination under osmostress.

Straight-chain fatty acids are dispensable in the myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus for vegetative growth and fruiting body formation.

Inactivation of the MXAN_0853 gene blocked the production in Myxococcus xanthus of straight-chain fatty acids which otherwise represent 30% of total fatty acids. Despite this drastic change in the fatty acid profile, no change in phenotype could be observed, which contrasts with previous interpretations of the role of straight-chain fatty acids in the organism's development.
