Asbestos in talc powders

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Talc powder and soapstone may contain asbestos. Random samples taken in the course of the past ten years from materials in use in Germany revealed only low asbestos contents. The present paper is based on analyses of bulk sample carried out by the German Berufsgenossenschaften as part of their prevention activities. In about one quarter of the 57 talc powder samples and 35 soapstone samples analysed by the BG-Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BGIA), asbestos could be detected, albeit in low concentrations. Two samples of each talc and soapstone samples contained asbestos in quantities exceeding 0.1 weight %. Workplace measurements showed that use of talc powders containing no more than 0.1 weight % of asbestos resulted in asbestos fibre concentrations ranging at about 10,000 fibres/m3. Asbestos fibres could only be identified in five out of 68 workplace air samples, taken in 39 measurement series. The asbestos content and the exposition situation at the workplace are to be determined in accordance to the German Technical Rule for hazardous substances (TRGS) 517.

Asbestos contamination in feldspar extraction sites: a failure of prevention? Commentary.

Fibrous tremolite is a mineral species belonging to the amphibole group. It is present almost everywhere in the world as a natural contaminant of other minerals, like talc and vermiculite. It can be also found as a natural contaminant of the chrysotile form of asbestos. Tremolite asbestos exposures result in respiratory health consequences similar to the other forms of asbestos exposure, includ...

Lung cancer probably related to talc exposure: a case report.

Industrial talc has been widely circulated in the world for a long time. The pure talc has little effects on humans, but inhalation of talc contaminated with asbestos can causes severe asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma. Herein, we represent a case of lung cancer after occupational exposure to industrial talc in the rubber manufacturing industry.

Asbestos in talc

Talc deposits include asbestos minerals such as chrysotile and amphiboles that may be carried over into consumer products. Optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses may not reveal their presence. Examples are given of electron microscopy procedures that permit detection and measurement.

Identification of chlorite and serpentine in cosmetic or pharmaceutical talc.

Chlorite is the most common accessory mineral group found in high purity talc ore used in cosmetic or pharmaceutical consumer talcum products. X-ray diffraction and wet chemical analytical data obtained on geologic samples representing commercial talc ore deposits of high purity and on processed samples representing talc found in consumer talcum products indicate that clinochlore and penninite ...

Safety Assessment of Talc as Used in Cosmetics.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (Panel) assessed the safety of talc for use in cosmetics. The safety of talc has been the subject of much debate through the years, partly because the relationship between talc and asbestos is commonly misunderstood. Industry specifications state that cosmetic-grade talc must contain no detectable fibrous, asbestos minerals. Therefore, the large amoun...
