EuroSTRATAFORM: A Moving-Boundary Framework for the Formation of Strata on Continental Margins
نویسنده
چکیده
My overarching goal is the development of twoand three-dimensional, moving-boundary, morphodynamic models of continental-margin sedimentation on geologic time scales. The lateQuaternary stratigraphic package on continental margins is a complex juxtaposition of depositional and erosional surfaces that reflects the response of intrinsically coupled, fluvial and shallow-marine sediment dynamics to eustatic cycling. My morphodynamic modeling approach averages over characteristic events, e.g. floods and coastal storms, and represents the evolution of the sediment surfaces in the fluvial and shallow-marine environments with differential equations that are coupled at the shoreline. A key focus of my work is the rigorous treatment of the shoreline as a dynamic moving boundary and, by extension, its response to changes in sea level. Model results will provide important insight into the dynamic response of continental margins to changes in sea level (Task D4) and the prediction of large-scale acoustic properties in the upper few tens of meters of the stratigraphic record.

Our goals are to understand how geotechnical and physical properties develop in marine sedimentary deposits on continental margins and how these properties influence sediment transport processes and the development of geomorphology. Our studies include predicting stability of sediment on the continental shelf and slope, providing input parameters for models of sediment transport and deformation...

In the context of STRATAFORM and EuroSTRATAFORM, the long-term goal of this project is to contribute toward simultaneously understanding (i) short term oceanic processes that erode, transport and deposit sediment in the margin system and (ii) the creation of the preserved stratigraphic architecture, seafloor morphology and sediment facies on continental margins. In order for models at such disp...

The long-term goals of our stratigraphy project are to obtain experimental evidence and to develop quantitative models of the formation of strata on continental margins. Experiments and analytical models can greatly contribute to better understand the relationships between variation in forcing functions such as sediment supply, sea-level changes and subsidence, and the resulting strata in depos...

The Upper Cretaceous strata were studied in a composite stratigraphic section named here Padeha-Baghak section in east of Koppeh-Dagh basin, north east of Iran. In this study, palynostratigraphy, palynofacies and depositional environment history of Abderaz Formation were integrated with sequence stratigraphy. Determination of sea level history and sequence units of the Abderaz Formation using s...
