der of his official life so useful and prominent. In that year he was appointed senior surgeon to the force, numbering 9,000, which served under His Majesty Soojah-ool-Moolk. While thus employed he took part in the first capture of Ghuzni, and was in 1840 decorated by Shah Soojah with the Third Class of the Order of the Doorranee Empire. During the next two years he was engaged in the thrilling series of operations which occurred in Afghanistan. He served with General Sale towards the close of 1841, and was present at all the actions which took place during the mnrch through the Ghilzee
