Verbal Understanding and Pavlovian Processes
نویسنده
چکیده
The behavioral processes through which people react appropriately to verbal descriptions remain poorly understood. I argue here that these processes are Pavlovian. Common objections to a Pavlovian account of symbolic behavior evidence a lack of familiarity with the relevant data or misunderstandings of operant theory. Although much remains to be done to explore the relation between verbal understanding and simpler forms of Pavlovian conditioning, the similarity of these two sets of phenomena has received increasing support in recent years. The difficulties of operant principles in accounting for symbolic behavior have a more general implication: Operant models, which focus on the maintenance of responding, must incorporate principles of behavioral induction that explain the origins of novel environment-behavior relations. Pavlovian processes are likely to contribute.

Pavlovian conditioning and multiple chemical sensitivity.
Pavlovian conditioning processes may contribute to some symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). This review summarizes the potential relevance of the literature on conditional taste and olfactory aversions, conditional sensitization, and conditional immunomodulation to understanding MCS. A conditioning-based perspective on MCS suggests novel research and treatment strategies.

متن کاملPavlovian to instrumental transfer of control in a human learning task.
Pavlovian learning tasks have been widely used as tools to understand basic cognitive and emotional processes in humans. The present studies investigated one particular task, Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT), with human participants in an effort to examine potential cognitive and emotional effects of Pavlovian cues upon instrumentally trained performance. In two experiments, subjects fi...
متن کاملThreat of Shock and Aversive Inhibition: Induced Anxiety Modulates Pavlovian-Instrumental Interactions
Anxiety can be an adaptive response to potentially threatening situations. However, if experienced in inappropriate contexts, it can also lead to pathological and maladaptive anxiety disorders. Experimentally, anxiety can be induced in healthy individuals using the threat of shock (ToS) paradigm. Accumulating work with this paradigm suggests that anxiety promotes harm-avoidant mechanisms throug...
متن کاملPavlovian fear memory circuits and phenotype models of PTSD.
Pavlovian fear conditioning, also known as classical fear conditioning is an important model in the study of the neurobiology of normal and pathological fear. Progress in the neurobiology of Pavlovian fear also enhances our understanding of disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and with developing effective treatment strategies. Here we describe how Pavlovian fear conditioning ...
