چکیده

A new, lightweight security mechanism for the PSTN-VoIP hybrid networks is described. It is based on the two informationhiding techniques: audio watermarking and network steganography. The proposed scheme is suitable especially for the PSTN-IP-PSTN (toll-by-passing) scenario, which nowadays is a very popular application of the IP Telephony systems. Proposed mechanism can be used to authenticate end-to-end transmitted voice between PSTN users. Additionally it improves IP part traffic security (both media stream and VoIP signalling messages). Exemplary scenario is presented for SIP signalling protocol along with SIP-T extensions and H.248/Megaco protocol.

Lightweight security mechanism for PSTN-VoIP cooperation

In this paper we describe a new, lightweight security mechanism for PSTN-VoIP cooperation that is based on two information hiding techniques: digital watermarking and steganography. Proposed scheme is especially suitable for PSTN-IP-PSTN (toll-by-passing) scenario which nowadays is very popular application of IP Telephony systems. With the use of this mechanism we authenticate end-to-end transm...

Internet Telephony Gateway Location

Although the Internet was designed to handle non-real time data traffic, it is being used increasingly to carry voice and video. One important class of contributors to this growth are Internet telephones. Critical to more widespread use of Internet telephony is smooth interoperability with the existing telephone network. This interoperability comes through the use of Internet Telephony Gateway’...

A lightweight protection mechanism against signaling attacks in a SIP-based VoIP environment

The advent of Voice over IP (VoIP) has offered numerous advantages but, at the same time, it has introduced security threats not previously encountered in networks with a closed architecture like the Public Switch Telephone Networks (PSTN). One of these threats is that of signaling attacks. This paper examines the signaling attacks in VoIP environments based on the Session Initiation Protocol (...

IP telephony: mobility and security IP telephony: mobility and security

With the introduction of IP based telephony services, the Internet has started to challenge the traditional PSTN networks as an infrastructure for providing real-time interactive services. This upcoming paradigm shift is not only driven by the desire to provide cost efficient solutions, but by basing the communication on IP we expect that the end-users will experience a greater set of attractiv...

Suitability of IP telephony in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN): A Case Study

This article seeks to develop a richer understanding of the suitability of IP telephony in the Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN) with an actual local exchange carrier (LEC)’s case and network simulation. We also performed a simple real options analysis to evaluate a telecommunications network. The underlying network and associated data were derived from our studies of an actual LEC. The ...
