چکیده

Based on the difference between negative refraction and negative refractive index, the phase compensating effect was proposed to distinguish negative refraction in left-handed materials (LHMs) and photonic crystals (PCs). With this effect, perfect lens (PL) of LHM in which both propagating and evanescent waves contribute to the image could be well understood, which is differed from superlens made of PCs. Furthermore, a 1D periodic structure consisted of ordinary materials and LHMs was predicted to realize higher and wider bandgaps than the 1D conventional photonic crystal due to phase compensating effect.  2004 Elsevier B.V. Compensating losses in negative-index metamaterials by optical parametric amplification.

Optical parametric amplification controlled by the auxiliary electromagnetic field enables transparency, amplification, and oscillation with no cavity in strongly absorbing negative-index metamaterials. The opposite directions of the wave vector and the Poynting vector in such materials result in extraordinary optical properties, including "backward" phase matching and the generation of entangl...

Left-handed metamaterial based superlens for subwavelength imaging of electromagnetic waves

Lenses made of negative index materials have the ability to focus the propagating and evanescent components of electromagnetic waves. Such a possibility enables super resolution, in turn resulting in sharper, subwavelength size images. In this present work, we present subwavelength imaging that was obtained from a one-dimensional left-handed metamaterial (LHM) composed of alternating layers of ...

Left-handed interfaces for electromagnetic surface waves.

We show that surface electromagnetic waves (SEMWs) propagating along two-dimensional (2D) interfaces separating different metamaterials can behave analogously to 3D electromagnetic waves in either usual or left-handed media, depending on the permeabilities and/or permittivities of the two materials forming the interface. We derive the conditions when SEMWs carry energy opposite to the phase vel...

Background and Aims: The precision of periodontal pocket measurements with periodontal probe is related to different factors. Some of these are related to examiner. The purpose of this study was to compare the right-handed and left-handed dental students in the measurement of periodontal pocket depth (PPD).Materials and Methods: Eight systemically healthy adult patients (mean age of 35 years) w...

Photonic Approach to Making a Left-Handed Material

A new approach to producing a composite material with negative refraction index is demonstrated. It is shown that a photonic structure which consists of two dielectric materials, with positive and negative dielectric permittivities, can support electromagnetic waves which exhibit the unusual electromagnetic property of left-handedness (or negative refraction index). These electromagnetic waves ...
