Dynamical Control of Rapid Tropical Cyclone Intensification by Environmental Shears
نویسندگان
چکیده
Improve our understanding of the physical processes by which (a) 3-D environmental shears, in particular the low-level meridional shear and upper-level vertical shear affect inner core structure and intensity, and (b) the mesoscale vortices, outer spiral rainbands, inner spiral rainbands, and the eyewall interact and affect TC development and intensity change. General questions to be addressed include: (a) How is the asymmetric structure generated in association with the environmental forcing? (b) How does the change of the structure affect TC intensity? (c) What are favorable environmental conditions for the tropical cyclone formation and rapid intensification in the western North Pacific? (d) How do changes in the environment control the movement and formation in the western North Pacific region?

Tropical Cyclone Intensity and Structure Changes in relation to Tropical Cyclone Outflow
The overarching objective of this project is to identify impacts to tropical cyclone structure and intensity throughout the tropical cyclone lifetime. A common factor is the impact of midand upperlevel environmental conditions that affects formation and intensification of a tropical cyclone. It is hypothesized that during the formation process, the environmental interaction has maximum impact o...
متن کاملDynamical Studies in Hurricane Intensity Change
The long-term goals and objectives of this research are to develop a more complete physical understanding of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity change processes. This year’s work focused on the following three areas: Determining the three-dimensional asymmetric dynamics of the TC core region; Testing hurricane maximum intensity theory; Analyzing the environmental influences on the intensification ...
متن کاملOn the intensification and recurvature of tropical cyclone
On Christmas Eve, 1974, tropical cyclone Tracy (hereafter Tracy) made landfall at Darwin, Australia, with tragic loss of life and property. The current study uses objective analyses from the NCEP and ERA40 re-analysis projects, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s operational Tropical Cyclone Limited Area Prediction System, TC-LAPS, to investigate (a) changes in the tropical circulation, and (b) cha...
متن کاملToward Clarity on Understanding Tropical Cyclone Intensification
The authors review an emerging paradigm of tropical cyclone intensification in the context of the prototype intensification problem, which relates to the spinup of a preexisting vortex near tropical storm strength in a quiescent environment. In addition, the authors review briefly what is known about tropical cyclone intensification in the presence of vertical wind shear. The authors go on to e...
متن کاملPutting to rest WISHE-ful misconceptions for tropical cyclone intensification
The purpose of this article is twofold. The first is to point out and correct several misconceptions about the putative WISHE mechanism of tropical cyclone intensification that currently are being taught to atmospheric science students, to tropical weather forecasters, and to laypeople who seek to understand how tropical cyclones intensify. The mechanism relates to the simplest problem of an in...
