چکیده
In general, a feature can be defined as a pattern occurring in a dataset that is the manifestation of correlations among various components of the data. For many features that occur in scientific data, these correlations can be defined precisely. For other features, they are not well understood or do not lend themselves to precise definitions. Surprisingly, the swirling feature in flow fields, commonly refered to as a vortex, is an example of a feature for which a precise definition does not exist. By most accounts [1–3], a vortex is characterized by the swirling motion of fluid around a central region. This characterization stems from our visual perception of swirling phenomena that are pervasive throughout the natural world. However, translating this intuitive description of a vortex into a formal definition has been quite a challenge. Lugt [1] proposed the following definition for a vortex: A vortex is the rotating motion of a multitude of material particles around a common center. The problem with this definition is that it is too vague. Although it is consistent with visual observations, it does not lend itself readily to implementation in a detection algorithm. In light of this, Robinson [3] attempted to provide a more concrete definition of a vortex by specifying the conditions for detecting swirling flows in three dimensions:

Experimental Investigation of Asymmetry of Vortex Flow Over Single Delta Wings
It is generally believed that, on slender delta wings, there is a critical state at which strong asymmetric vortices are found along the leading edge on the lee-side of the delta wing. These asymmetric vortices can lead to high lateral forces even when slender delta wing is at the zero angle of yaw. Some experimental studies reported recently, cast considerable doubt as to the validity of the a...
متن کامل12th International Symposium on Flow Visualization
In this paper, we present a fast and accurate method for the combined detection and interactive visualization of vortex structures in 3D flow and their corresponding velocity field. Vortex surfaces are extracted by identifying vortex core lines in combination with isosurfaces of λ2. The velocity field on those vortex surfaces is visualized by a surface LIC method that works in image space. An e...
متن کاملData Visualization of Invisible Airflow Hazards During Helicopter Takeoff and Landing Operations
Many aircraft accidents each year are caused by encounters with unseen airflow hazards near the ground such as vortices, downdrafts, wind shear, microbursts, or other turbulence. While such hazards frequently pose problems to fixed-wing airplanes, they are especially dangerous to helicopters, which often have to operate in confined spaces and under operationally stressful conditions. We are dev...
متن کاملVortex Detection in 4D MRI Data: Using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition for Improved Noise-Robustness
Recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology enabled the acquisition of time-resolved 3D blood flow data. Several flow visualization methods have been applied to these data in order to investigate links between cardiovascular diseases and hemodynamic phenomena, such as vortices in the blood flow. In this work, we investigate the use of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD)...
متن کاملVisualization of the tip vortices in a wind turbine wake
In the present study, an experimental study was conducted to characterize the formation and the evolution of the helical tip vortices and turbulent flow structures in the wake of a horizontal axis wind turbine model placed in an atmospheric boundary layer wind. A high-resolution particle image velocimetry system was used to make detailed flow field measurements to quantify the time evolution of...
متن کاملO-11: Zona Pellucida Birefringence and Meiotic Spindle Visualization of Human Oocytes Are Not Influenced by In Vitro Maturation Technology
Background: In vitro maturation (IVM) is a promising treatment option for certain infertile women. Nowadays, with the aid of the Polscope, it has become possible to evaluate zona pellucida (ZP) and spindle as parameters of oocyte quality. The goal was to investigate the relationship between the presence of the meiotic spindle and ZP birefringence with morphology of the in vivo and in vitro matu...
