Overbeck-Wright gives a very accurate though long definition of this disease in which he includes the three stages of katatonia. In this so-called stuporous type it should be remembered that there is no true stupor?but that this name is applied because of the immobility and mutism of the patient. Stoddard considers katatonic stupor to be the most characteristic variety of dementia prsecox, and this raises the point as to whether such cases should not be diagnosed dementia pnecox straight away, instead of calling them by the fanciful names of melancholic stupor, atonia, or psychocoma. BACKGROUND The dominant diagnostic model of the classification of depression today is unitarian; however, since Kurt Schneider (1920) introduced the concept of endogenous depression and reactive depression, the binary model has still often been used on a clinical basis. Notwithstanding this, to our knowledge, there have been no collective data on how psychiatrists differentiate these two condit...

Two brothers with DIDMOAD syndrome are reported. The older brother has diabetes mellitus (type I), diabetes insipidus, optic atrophy, deafness and atonia of the urinary tract with severe symptoms such as diabetic ketoacidosis and frequent urinary tract infections. His younger brother had the same manifestations but with less severity. We report the findings of our two patients and compare ...

In this mini review, we summarize our findings regarding the brainstem neurons responsible for the postural, masseter, or pharyngeal muscle atonia observed during paradoxical sleep (PS) in freely moving cats. Both the pons and medulla contain neurons showing tonic activation selective to PS and atonia, referred to as PS/atonia-on-neurons. The PS/atonia-on neurons, characterized by their most sl...
