Engaging Social Capital for Decentralized Urban Stormwater Management

چکیده
Decentralized approaches to urban stormwater management, whereby installations of green infrastructure (e.g., rain gardens, bioswales, constructed wetlands) are dispersed throughout a management area, are cost-effective solutions with co-benefits beyond just water abatement. Instead of investing in traditional approaches for managing stormwater, such as deep tunnels and high capacity treatment facilities (i.e., gray infrastructure), municipalities that invest in green approaches (i.e., natural capital) may reap multiple benefits from increased green space, ecosystem services, increased property values, and community engagement. To maximize the provision of these benefits, water managers should account for social and other human capitals in their management plans. In this presentation, we will highlight the role of human, social, and cultural capitals in the USEPA’s groundbreaking study in the Shepherd Creek OPEN ACCESS

Identification and Induction of Human, Social, andCultural Capitals through an Experimental Approachto Stormwater Management
Decentralized stormwater management is based on the dispersal of stormwater management practices (SWMP) throughout a watershed to manage stormwater runoff volume and potentially restore natural hydrologic processes. This approach to stormwater management is increasingly popular but faces constraints related to land access and citizen engagement. We tested a novel method of environmental managem...

متن کاملUpscaling Natural and Social Capitals forDecentralized Urban Stormwater Management
Decentralized municipal stormwater management, whereby best management practices are dispersed throughout a watershed, are gaining popularity but face unique constraints related to land access and citizen engagement. Decentralized installations require perpetual access to public and private land, a constraint that may be solved creatively in many urban settings through the repurposing of vacant...
متن کاملRole of Resilience in Sustainable Urban Stormwater Management
Typically, best management practices (BMPs) are implemented to help sustainable stormwater management in urban areas. Over recent decades the selection of urban stormwater management measures for a site has been a challenge among urban planners where thecriterion based on flood volume no longer suffices for selecting urban drainage solutions. Therefore there is a need to consider a set of holis...
متن کاملImpediments and solutions to sustainable, watershed-scale urban stormwater management: lessons from Australia and the United States.
In urban and suburban areas, stormwater runoff is a primary stressor on surface waters. Conventional urban stormwater drainage systems often route runoff directly to streams and rivers, thus exacerbating pollutant inputs and hydrologic disturbance, and resulting in the degradation of ecosystem structure and function. Decentralized stormwater management tools, such as low impact development (LID...
