The Chandra Deep Field-North Survey: XVII. Evolution of magnetic activity in old late-type stars

چکیده
The extremely sensitive Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N) pencil-beam X-ray survey is used to identify and characterize the X-ray emission from old high-latitude main sequence Galactic stars. Our principal goal is to investigate the expected long-term decay of magnetic activity of late-type stars due to the gradual spindown of stellar rotation from a magnetized stellar wind. Thirteen X-ray sources are associated with late-type stars; 11 of these constitute a well-defined sample for statistical analysis. This sample consists of 2 G, 2 K0−K4, and 7 M2−M5 stars with median V -band magnitude around 19 and median distance around 300 pc. X-ray luminosities are typically logLx ≃ 27 erg s Based in part on observations obtained with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, which is a joint project of the University of Texas at Austin, the Pennsylvania State University, Stanford University, Ludwig-MaximiliansUniversitt München, and Georg-August-Universitt Göttingen. First Application of the Fe XVII I ( 17 . 10 Å ) / I ( 17 . 05 Å ) Line Ratio to Constrain the Plasma Density of a Cosmic X - ray Source
We show that the Fe XVII I(17.10 Å)/I(17.05 Å) line ratio observed in the Chandra HETG spectrum of the intermediate polar EX Hydrae is significantly smaller than that observed in the Sun or other late-type stars. Using the Livermore X-ray Spectral Synthesizer, which calculates spectral models of highly charged ions based on HULLAC atomic data, we find that the observed I(17.10 Å)/I(17.05 Å) lin...
متن کاملThe X-ray luminosity function of galaxies and its evolution
We compile one of the largest ever samples to probe the X-ray normal galaxy luminosity function and its evolution with cosmic time. In particular, we select 207 galaxies (106 late and 101 early-type systems) from the Chandra Deep Field North and South surveys, the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and the XBOOTES survey. We derive the luminosity function separately for the total (early+late), t...
متن کاملSpin and Magnetism in Old Neutron Stars
The thermal, spin and magnetic evolution of neutron stars in the old low mass binaries is first explored. Recycled to very short periods via accretion torques, the neutron stars lose their magnetism progressively. If accretion proceeds undisturbed for 100 Myrs these stars can rotate close to break up with periods far below the minimum observed of 1.558 ms. We investigate their histories using p...
متن کاملThe Las Campanas Infra - red Survey . V . Keck Spectroscopy of a large sample of Extremely Red Objects
We present deep Keck spectroscopy, using the DEIMOS and LRIS spectrographs, of a large and representative sample of 67 " Extremely Red Objects " (EROs) to H = 20.5 in three fields (SSA22, Chandra Deep Field South and the NTT Deep Field) drawn from the Las Campanas Infrared Survey. Using the colour cut (I − H) > 3.0 (Vega magnitudes) adopted in earlier papers in this series, we verify the effici...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
