Development of soil pH and lime requirement maps using on-the-go soil sensors

چکیده
Since conventional sampling and laboratory soil analysis do not provide a cost effective capability to obtain georeferenced measurements with adequate frequency, different onthe-go sensing techniques have been attempted. One such recently commercialized sensing system combines mapping of soil electrical conductivity and pH. The concept of direct measurement of soil pH has allowed for a substantial increase in measurement density. In this publication, the analysis of variable rate lime prescription maps is discussed. Liming rates generated from on-the-go measurements can result in improved prediction of liming requirement compared to the conventional 1 ha grid sampling (RMSE = 1354 versus 2506 kg/ha).

Soil pH Mapping with an On-The-Go Sensor
Soil pH is a key parameter for crop productivity, therefore, its spatial variation should be adequately addressed to improve precision management decisions. Recently, the Veris pH Manager™, a sensor for high-resolution mapping of soil pH at the field scale, has been made commercially available in the US. While driving over the field, soil pH is measured on-the-go directly within the soil by ion...
متن کاملPotential of On-Line Visible and Near Infrared Spectroscopy for Measurement of pH for Deriving Variable Rate Lime Recommendations
This paper aims at exploring the potential of visible and near infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy for on-line measurement of soil pH, with the intention to produce variable rate lime recommendation maps. An on-line vis-NIR soil sensor set up to a frame was used in this study. Lime application maps, based on pH predicted by vis-NIR techniques, were compared with maps based on traditional lab-measur...

Soil acidity can affect plant growth directly and indirectly by affecting the plantavailability of nutrients, levels of phytotoxic elements, and microbial activity. Soils may become acidic in the long term as a result of several natural processes. In the short term, however, soil acidity develops mainly due to application of N fertilizers or manure, primarily those having high concentrations of...

The concept of precision agriculture emerged from the belief that variability of growing conditions is one of the major contributors to field-scale differences in yield, and that varying the agricultural inputs according to local changes in soil properties could be beneficial. Many producers have already accumulated a yield history from several growing seasons. However, to engage in an effectiv...

Abstract Background and objectives: Biological control of erosion in sloping lands and recognizing the effects of plant species, which are used for rangeland improvement, is the most effective and sustainable method for stabilizing and controlling soil fertility in rangeland.Variations of plants composition cause extensive changes in the soil so that in the short term return to the origina...
