Reproductive interference

چکیده
Figure 1. Examples of reproductive interference. Reproductive interference can be caused by transfer of pollen between different plant species by bees (top left); a young male fur seal attempts to mate with a king penguin (top right); reproductive interference between species of damselfly can drive the evolution of reproductive character displacement (bottom right); mating calls made by males of different species can overlap in frequency causing signal jamming as in the frog Epipedobates trivittatus (bottom left). Reproductive interference occurs when individuals of one species engage in reproductive activities with individuals of another species, and when these interactions reduce the fitness of one or both species (Figure 1). These interactions can vary from competition between males of different species for access to females through to matings between individuals of different species.

Reproductive interference between animal species.
Although sexual interactions between species (reproductive interference) have been reported from a wide range of animal taxa, their potential for determining species coexistence is often disregarded. Here, we review evidence from laboratory and field studies illustrating that heterospecific sexual interactions are frequently associated with fitness loss and can have severe ecological and evolut...
متن کاملEffects of reproductive interference on the competitive displacement between two invasive whiteflies.
Reproductive interference is one of the major factors mediating species exclusion among insects. The cryptic species Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) and Mediterranean (MED) of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci complex have invaded many parts of the world and often exhibit niche overlap and reproductive interference. However, contrasting patterns of competitive displacement between the two invaders h...

Negative reproductive interactions are likely to be strongest between close relatives and may be important in limiting local coexistence. In plants, interspecific pollen flow is common between co-occurring close relatives and may serve as the key mechanism of reproductive interference. Agamic complexes, systems in which some populations reproduce through asexual seeds (apomixis), while others r...
متن کاملReproductive interference by male Drosophila subobscura on female D. persimilis: A laboratory experiment
While females often reject courtship attempts by heterospecific males, reproductive interference by harassment from such males can nonetheless occur, potentially reducing female fitness. Such effects may be profound following a range expansion, when males from a new species may suddenly encounter (and perhaps even become abundant relative to) females of related native species. Drosophila subobs...
متن کاملSympatry with the devil: reproductive interference could hamper species coexistence.
1. As species are often considered discrete natural units, interspecific sexual interactions are often disregarded as potential factors determining community composition. Nevertheless reproductive interference, ranging from signal jamming to hybridization, can have significant costs for species sharing similar signal channels. 2. We combined laboratory and field experiments to test whether the ...
