The Case for an Accelerating Universe from Supernovae To Appear as an Invited Review for PASP
نویسنده
چکیده
The unexpected faintness of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), as measured by two teams, has been interpreted as evidence that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. We review the current challenges to this interpretation and seek to answer whether the cosmological implications are compelling. We discuss future observations of SNe Ia which could offer extraordinary evidence to test acceleration. subject headings: supernovae: general−cosmology: observations 1Space Telescope Science Institute, 3700 San Martin Drive, Baltimore, MD 21218

Dimming supernovae without cosmic acceleration.
We present a simple model where photons propagating in extragalactic magnetic fields can oscillate into very light axions. The oscillations may convert some of the photons, departing a distant supernova, into axions, making the supernova appear dimmer and hence more distant than it really is. Averaging over different configurations of the magnetic field we find that the dimming saturates at abo...
متن کاملEinstein’s Biggest Blunder? High-Redshift Supernovae and the Accelerating Universe
Nearly four years ago, two teams of observational astronomers reported that high-redshift type Ia supernovae are fainter than expected in a decelerating or freely coasting universe. The radical conclusion that the Universe has been accelerating in the past few billion years, possibly due to a nonzero value for Einstein’s cosmological constant, has gripped the world of astrophysics and caused a ...
متن کاملObservational Evidence from Supernovae for a Contracting Universe
New precision in measuring extragalactic distances using supernovae has confirmed with high probability an accelerating increase in redshift with distance. This has been interpreted as implying the existence of dark energy in an expanding and accelerating, flat universe. A more logical explanation of these observations follows directly from an observation made by Erwin Schrödinger in 1939 that ...
متن کاملSupernovae as a Probe of Particle Physics and Cosmology
It has very recently been demonstrated by Csáki, Kaloper and Terning (CKT) that the faintness of supernovae at high redshift can be accommodated by mixing of a light axion with the photon in the presence of an intergalactic magnetic field, as opposed to the usual explanation of an accelerating universe by a dark energy component. In this paper we analyze further aspects of the CKT mechanism and...
متن کاملTesting Cosmic Acceleration with Type Ia Supernovae
We discuss recent evidence for an accelerating Universe from measurements of type Ia supernovae at high redshift, and describe tests of various systematic effects such as extinction and evolution that could be biasing the cosmological result. Continued observations of these objects, both over a wider wavelength region and at higher redshift, should provide strong evidence in favor or against th...
