Primary tuberculosis of the conjunctiva treated with streptomycin and P.A.S.

چکیده

PRIMARY tuberculosis of the conjunctiva is a rare condition, the existence of which was for long open to question. It has, however, now been shown that the disease can be produced experimentally (Igersheimer, 1922) and later reports have established its clinical occurrence. (Blevgad, 1933; Bruce and Locatcher-Khorazo, 1947). Since the advent of antibiotics, there have been several reports of cases treated with streptomycin. In some, both local and systemic streptomycin has been used (Das Gupta and Usman, 1949; Sykowski, 1950); and in others the use of the drug has been combined with ultra-violet light therapy (Kamel, 1950), or with para-amino-salicylic acid (Wheeler and Sinclair, 1952). In all cases, however, the course of treatment has been comparatively short, and it has not always been effective in preventing caseation of the regional glands (Donegan, 1950).

Comparison of solid and liquid medium sensitivity tests of tubercle bacilli to para-aminosalicylic acid.

In the treatment of tuberculosis para-aminosalicylic acid (P.A.S.) is now chiefly used in combination with streptomycin or isoniazid with the aim of preventing or delaying the emergence of drug-resistant strains of tubercle bacilli (Medical Research Council, 1950, 1953c). Such combined therapy is only effective in preventing drug resistance when the strains obtained before the start of treatmen...

Current results in treatment of tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of treatment of tuberculous meningitis in children who were admitted to the Children's Hospital, Sheffield, during 1954. Fifteen of these were admitted to the professorial unit, while five were under the care of Dr. T. Colver. The study is a direct continuation of earlier work (Illingworth and Lorber, 1951 ; Lorber, 1951; Lorber, 1954a, 1954b)...

Chemotherapy of tuberculosis of bones and joints.

The assessment of therapeutic remedies for tuberculosis is notoriously difficult : many remedies in the past have enjoyed popular favour but have been forgotten ; many papers have been written on calcium or tuberculin or gold, but who now refers to them? These thoughts must have been in the minds of the Medical Research Council in 1946 when they undertook to plan trials of streptomycin in pulmo...

Comparison of techniques for measuring the isoniazid resistance of tubercle bacilli.

As with streptomycin and P.A.S., the introduction of isoniazid for the treatment of tuberculosis has raised the problem of the development of resistance to the drug in strains of tubercle bacilli recovered from treated patients. In the Medical Research Council (1952) trials 71% of cultures from patients who had received three months' treatment with isoniazid alone were found to be resistant. Al...
