GeV-scale electron acceleration in a gas-filled capillary discharge waveguide

چکیده
We report experimental results on laser-driven electron acceleration with low divergence. The electron beam was generated by focussing 750 mJ, 42 fs laser pulses into a gas-filled capillary discharge waveguide at electron densities in the range between 1018 and 1019cm−3. Quasi-monoenergetic electron bunches with energies as high as 500 MeV have been detected, with features reaching up to 1 GeV, albeit with large shot-to-shot fluctuations. A more stable regime with higher bunch charge (20–45 pC) and less energy (200–300 MeV) could also be observed. The beam divergence and the pointing stability are around or below 1 mrad and 8 mrad, respectively. These findings are consistent with self-injection of electrons into a breaking plasma wave. 6 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Analysis of Capillary Guided Laser Plasma Accelerator Experiments at LBNL
Laser wakefield acceleration experiments were carried out by using a hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide. For a 15 mm long, 200 μm diameter capillary, quasi-monoenergetic e-beams up to 300 MeV were observed. By de-tuning discharge delay from optimum guiding performance, self-trapping was found to be stabilized. For a 33 mm long, 300 μm capillary, a parameter regime with high energy el...
متن کاملTransverse interferometry of a hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide.
Transverse interferometric measurements are presented of the plasma channel formed in a hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide recently used to generate 1 GeV electrons in a laser-driven plasma accelerator for the first time. The measurements were found to be in good agreement with nonlocal thermal equilibrium simulations, but showed significant differences with the results of a quasista...
متن کاملGeV electron beams from a centimeter-scale channel guided laser wakefield accelerator
Laser wakefield accelerators can produce electric fields of order 10–100 GV/m, suitable for acceleration of electrons to relativistic energies. The wakefields are excited by a relativistically intense laser pulse propagating through a plasma and have a phase velocity determined by the group velocity of the light pulse. Two important effects that can limit the acceleration distance and hence the...
متن کاملLaser-driven acceleration of electrons in a partially ionized plasma channel.
The generation of quasimonoenergetic electron beams, with energies up to 200 MeV, by a laser-plasma accelerator driven in a hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide is investigated. Injection and acceleration of electrons is found to depend sensitively on the delay between the onset of the discharge current and the arrival of the laser pulse. A comparison of spectroscopic and interferometr...
متن کاملInvestigation of a hydrogen plasma waveguide.
A hydrogen plasma waveguide for high-intensity laser pulses is described. The guiding channel is formed by a small-scale discharge in a hydrogen-filled capillary. The measured lifetime of the capillary is inferred to be greater than 10(6) shots. The results of interferometric measurements of the electron density in the capillary are presented. The guiding channel is found to be highly ionized w...
