ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF ICE Ih, UP TO 2.8 KBAR, BY BRILLOUIN SPECTROSCOPY

The technique of high resolution Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine accurately the hydrostatic pressure dependence of the elastic constants of ice Ih in the full pressure range of phase stability 0 2.8 kbar. The percentage changes in the adiabatic elastic constants c,,, cI2. cI3, cS3, c,, and bulk modulus, over the pressure range, are 3.0, 7.2, 8.4, 2.8, -1.5 and 5.6 percent per ...

Diurnal Change from Surface to Volume Scattering Induced by Thaw and Refreeze of the the Snow Cover: a Thermodynamic Approach

Sea ice morphological features are of major relevance to oceanic and general circulation models as well as navigation or oil and gas exploration [1]. Beside their first order impact on drag coefficients [2], they create a horizontal heterogeneity of the dynamic and therefore thermodynamic conditions at the ice water interface which control ocean-ice-atmosphere fluxes. However, computer limitati...

Polarimetric signatures of sea ice 1. Theoretical model

Physical, structural, and electromagnetic properties and interrelating processes in sea ice are used to develop a composite model for polarimetric backscattering signatures of sea ice. Physical properties of sea ice constituents such as ice, brine, air, and salt are presented in terms of their effects on electromagnetic wave interactions. Sea ice structure and geometry of scatterers are related...

Solar Radiative Heating in First Year Sea Ice

Temperature measurements taken in young landfast Antarctic sea ice show daily oscillations consistent with heating by solar radiation. We present and solve a heat conduction model for the temperature with a nonlinear thermal capacity and a distributed source term for solar power absorption based on Monte Carlo scattering simulations of penetrating photons. We observe two characteristic modes fo...

A numerical model for electromagnetic scattering from sea ice

A numerical model for scattering from sea ice based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique is presented. The sea ice medium is modeled as consisting of randomly located spherical brine scatterers with a specified fractional volume, and the medium is modeled both with and without a randomly rough boundary to study the relative effects of volume and surface scattering. A Monte Carl...
