چکیده
What are PCBs? PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are a group of synthetic oil-like chemicals of the organochlorine family. It was first described in technical literature in 1881 and commercial production commenced in the late 1920s. Until their toxic nature was recognized and their use was banned in the early 1980s, they were widely used as insulation in electrical equipment, particularly transformers. All commercially produced PCBs are complex mixtures of many different congeners-PCB molecule containing a specific number of chlorine molecules at specific sites)

متن کاملDistribution of polychlorinated biphenyl residues in several tissues of fish from the North End Lake, Port Elizabeth, South Africa
The concentrations and distribution of 6 PCB indicator congeners (IUPAC nos. 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, and 180) were measured in 236 organ samples of fish (Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis mossambicus) from the North End Lake in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were extracted from the fish muscles, gills, gonads and livers using USEPA method 8082, followed by a clean-u...

Northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) were injected intraperitoneally either with a solution of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) 126 in corn oil at a concentration of 0.2, 0.7, 2.3, or 7.8 mg/kg body weight or with corn oil alone. Appropriate assay conditions with hepatic microsomes were determined for four cytochrome P450-associated monooxygenases: ethoxyresorufin-Odealkylase (EROD), methoxy-ROD...
متن کاملPolychlorinated biphenyl/biphenyl degrading gene clusters in Rhodococcus sp. K37, HA99, and TA431 are different from well-known bph gene clusters of Rhodococci.
Four kinds of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-degrading Rhodococcus sp. (TA421, TA431, HA99, and K37) have been isolated from termite ecosystem and under alkaline condition. The bph gene cluster involved in the degradation of PCB/biphenyl has been analyzed in strain TA421. This gene cluster was highly homologous to bph gene clusters in R. globerulus P6 and Rhodococcus sp. RHA1. In this study, we...
