Schumpeter’s Creative Destruction: A Review of the Evidence
نویسنده
چکیده
Leapfrogging innovation competition through the process of creative destruction encourages the innovation in product and process that lengthens and improves lives. Schumpeter’s process of creative destruction emphasizes dynamic innovation competition, as contrasted with the standard model of static price competition. The ‘big-is-better’ account of creative destruction claimed, in addition, that monopolies were the most fruitful source of new leapfrogging innovation. The new ‘small-isbetter’ account claims that small, non-incumbent firms are often the most fruitful source of new leapfrogging innovation. I examine the growing evidence that innovation competition is important, and more likely to be carried out by small, non-incumbent firms. JEL codes: O30 Technological Change, General.

Technological competition , creative destruction and the competitive process
This paper takes a simple definition of competition as a threat to established revenues. It then develops this idea as it applies to technological change through a series of illustrative examples. ‘Technological competition’ occurs only when one technology substitutes for another, for a given market. When innovation generates new uses – new markets – it does not result in technological competit...
متن کاملThe Economy as an Agent-Based Whole -Simulating Schumpetarian Dynamics
As pointed out by Mathews (2002) following the recent special issue of Industry and Innovation on Schumpeter’s “lost” chapter, “The economy as a whole”, Schumpeter’s view on the dynamics of economic systems has regained topicality as an early contribution to the complexity view in economics. The aim of this paper is to test some of the ideas of Schumpeter using the agent-based computational mod...
متن کاملTerms of Trade Movements and the Global Economic Crisis: Implications for the Asia-Pacific Region
Dramatic changes in the relative prices of goods in international trade have accompanied, and indeed preceded, the global crisis. These changes are reflected in the terms of trade of individual countries and in the relative prices of goods within those countries. Asia-Pacific countries are particularly affected by the changes in relative prices as they have been at the core of the increasing gl...
متن کاملLessons from Schumpeterian Growth Theory
Formal models allow us to make verbal notions operational and confront them with data. Schumpeterian growth theory has “operationalized” Schumpeter’s notion of creative destruction -the process by which new innovations replace older technologies-, in two ways. First, it has developed models based on creative destruction that shed new light on several microeconomic aspects of the growth process:...
متن کاملThe Growth of Firms and the Evolution of Industries
Fast growth by a firm often can lead to conflict with its competitors over market shares. This conflict impacts on the growth rate of the firm as well as on industry structure. The nature of these impacts depends on the competitive strategies adopted by the firm and its competitors. Alternative patterns of strategies are identified and analyzed, including patterns associated with Schumpeter’s t...
