چکیده

We propose a simple but useful parametrization of the flavor composition of ultrahigh-energy neutrino fluxes produced from distant astrophysical sources: φe : φμ : φτ = sin 2 ξ cos2 ζ : cos2 ξ cos2 ζ : sin ζ. We show that it is possible to determine or constrain ξ and ζ by observing two independent neutrino flux ratios at the second-generation neutrino telescopes, provided three neutrino mixing angles and the Dirac CP-violating phase have been well measured in neutrino oscillations. Any deviation of ζ from zero will signify the existence of cosmic ντ and ντ neutrinos at the source, and an accurate value of ξ can be used to test both the conventional mechanism and the postulated scenarios for cosmic neutrino production.

Neutrino Observatories Can Characterize Cosmic Sources and Neutrino Properties

Neutrino telescopes that measure relative fluxes of ultrahigh-energy νe, νμ, ντ can give information about the location and characteristics of sources, about neutrino mixing, and can test for neutrino instability and for departures from CPT invariance in the neutrino sector. We investigate consequences of neutrino mixing for the neutrino flux arriving at Earth, and consider how terrestrial meas...

Neutrino telescopes as a probe of active and sterile neutrino mixings

If the ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino fluxes produced from a distant astrophysical source can be measured at a km-size neutrino telescope, they will provide a promising way to help determine the flavor mixing pattern of three active neutrinos. Considering the conventional UHE neutrino source with the flavor ratio φe : φμ : φτ = 1 : 2 : 0, I show that φDe : φ D μ : φ D τ = (1− 2∆) : (1 + ∆) : (...

Neutrino Mixing : from the Broken μ - τ Symmetry to the Broken Friedberg - Lee Symmetry

I argue that the observed flavor structures of leptons and quarks might imply the existence of certain flavor symmetries. The latter should be a good starting point to build realistic models towards deeper understanding of the fermion mass spectra and flavor mixing patterns. The µ-τ permutation symmetry serves for such an example to interpret the almost maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle...

Neutrino Telescopes as a Probe of Broken μ-τ Symmetry

It is known that neutrino oscillations may map φe : φμ : φτ = 1 : 2 : 0, the initial flavor ratios of ultrahigh-energy neutrino fluxes produced from a distant astrophysical source, into φe : φ D μ : φ D τ = 1 : 1 : 1 at the detector of a neutrino telescope. We remark that this naive expectation is only valid in the μ-τ symmetry limit, in which two neutrino mixing angles satisfy θ13 = 0 and θ23 ...

Theoretical Overview of Neutrino Properties

I give an overview of some basic properties of massive neutrinos. The first part of this talk is devoted to three fundamental questions about three known neutrinos and to their flavor issues — the mass spectrum, mixing pattern and CP violation. The second part of this talk is to highlight a few hot topics at the frontiers of neutrino physics and neutrino astrophysics, including the naturalness ...
