Appraisal of the porcine kidney autotransplantation model.

چکیده
Animal models are extensively used for transplantation related research, especially kidney transplantation. Porcine autotransplantation models are considered to be favorable regarding translatability to the human setting. The key determinants for translatability of the model are discussed, comprising animal age, development, anatomy, anesthesia and surgical protocols, and perioperative care. With the detailed discussion of these determinants and the pitfalls in diagnosing animal discomfort, an attempt is made to provide a uniform porcine kidney autotransplantation model with tools to improve currently used models.

Heterotopic Renal Autotransplantation in a Porcine Model: A Step-by-Step Protocol
Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. It offers better life expectancy and higher quality of life when compared to dialysis. Although the last few decades have seen major improvements in patient outcomes following kidney transplantation, the increasing shortage of available organs represents a severe problem worldwide. To expand t...
متن کاملImproved preservation and microcirculation with POLYSOL after transplantation in a porcine kidney autotransplantation model.
BACKGROUND The most widely used preservation method for kidney grafts is cold static storage (CS) using the University of Wisconsin (UW) solution. To date, new preservation solutions have not been able to significantly improve preservation quality of grafts. The aim of this study was to compare POLYSOL, a recently developed low viscosity preservation solution, and the UW solution for CS of porc...
متن کاملRenal autotransplantation as savior in hybrid surgery for aortic aneurysm repair.
Renal autotransplantation is a safe and effective procedure to reconstruct the urinary tract. The current indications for autotransplantation include renal vascular disease, severe ureteral damage, tumours of the kidney and ureter, complex nephrolithiasis and retroperitoneal fibrosis. We report a rare case where we had to perform renal autotransplantation along with hybrid surgery for aortic an...
متن کاملThyrotoxicosis Occurring in Secondary Hyperparathyroidism Patients Undergoing Dialysis after Total Parathyroidectomy with Autotransplantation
Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) that is characterized by excessive synthesis of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and parathyroid hyperplasia.[1] The prevalence of CKD is estimated to be 5–10%, and the burden of CKD‐associated diseases is alarmingly high.[2,3] Despite advances in medical therapy for SHPT, surgical parathyroidectomy remains t...
متن کاملRenal Autotransplantation and Extracorporeal Nephron-Sparing Surgery for De Novo Renal Cell Carcinoma in a Kidney Allograft
De novo renal cell carcinoma (RCC) rarely occurs in kidney allografts; however, the risk of RCC in these patients is 100-fold that of the general healthy population. Although total nephrectomy has been the standard treatment for kidney allograft RCC, several authors have reported that early-stage RCC in kidney allografts was successfully treated with nephron-sparing surgery. We herein describe ...
