The Complexity of Width Minimization for Existential Positive Queries

چکیده
Existential positive queries are logical sentences built from conjunction, disjunction, and existential quantification, and are also known as select-project-join-union queries in database theory, where they are recognized as a basic and fundamental class of queries. It is known that the number of variables needed to express an existential positive query is the crucial parameter determining the complexity of evaluating it on a database, and is hence a natural measure from the perspective of query optimization and rewriting. In this article, we study the complexity of the natural decision problem associated to this measure, which we call the expressibility problem: Given an existential positive query and a number k, can the query be expressed using k (or fewer) variables? We precisely determine the complexity of the expressibility problem, showing that it is complete for the level Πp2 of the polynomial hierarchy. Moreover, we prove that the expressibility problem is undecidable in positive logic (that is, existential positive logic plus universal quantification), thus establishing existential positive logic as a maximal syntactic fragment where expressibility is decidable.

Towards Efficient Reasoning Under Guarded-Based Disjunctive Existential Rules
The complete picture of the complexity of answering (unions of) conjunctive queries under the main guarded-based classes of disjunctive existential rules has been recently settled. It has been shown that the problem is very hard, namely 2ExpTime-complete, even for fixed sets of rules expressed in lightweight formalisms. This gives rise to the question whether its complexity can be reduced by re...
متن کاملQuery Rewriting over Shallow Ontologies
We investigate the size of conjunctive query rewritings over OWL2QL ontologies of depth 1 and 2 by means of a new formalism, called hypergraph programs, for computing Boolean functions. Both positive and negative results are obtained. All conjunctive queries over ontologies of depth 1 have polynomial-size nonrecursive datalog rewritings; tree-shaped queries have polynomial-size positive existen...
متن کاملHow Many Variables Are Needed to Express an Existential Positive Query?
The number of variables used by a first-order query is a fundamental measure which has been studied in numerous contexts, and which is known to be highly relevant to the task of query evaluation. In this article, we study this measure in the context of existential positive queries. Building on previous work, we present a combinatorial quantity defined on existential positive queries; we show th...
متن کاملConjunctive Query Containment Revisited
We consider the problems of conjunctive query containment and minimization, which are known to be NP-complete, and show that these problems can be solved in polynomial time for the class of acyclic queries. We then generalize the notion of acyclicity and deene a parameter called query width that captures the \degree of cyclicity" of a query: in particular, a query is acyclic if and only if its ...
