A biogeochemical model for metabolism and nutrient cycling in a Southeastern Piedmont impoundment
نویسندگان
چکیده
While non-point nutrient loads are important determinants of biological productivity in Southeastern Piedmont impoundments, productivity can be attenuated by concomitant sediment loads that reduce the biological availability of these nutrients. A biogeochemical model is proposed that explicitly accounts for the effects of sedimentenutrient interactions on multiple components of phytoplankton metabolism dynamics, including algal photosynthesis and respiration, pH, carbonate speciation, dissolved oxygen, and biochemical oxygen demand. Sedimentenutrient interactions relate nutrient uptake and release to pH, sediment oxygen demand, sediment organic matter, and iron. pH is a state variable in our model, affects sedimentenutrient adsorption, and constrains model parameters. The model replicates water quality observations in a small Southeastern Piedmont impoundment and suggests that pH-dependent sedimentenutrient adsorption dominates both orthophosphate and ammonium dynamics, with phosphate adsorption being controlled by ligand exchange to iron oxides, and ammonium adsorption being controlled by the cation exchange capacity. Sediment organic matter accumulation and decay also affects nutrient availability, and may explain the longterm increase of hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen deficit in Lake Lanier, a large Southeastern Piedmont impoundment. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Nitrogen Cycling Responses to Fire in the Southeastern U.s
I. ABSTRACT Fire can play a significant role in runoff, sediment yield and nutrient transport from aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the southeast US. Hydrologic and nutrient cycling interactions with fire are likely to vary considerably across the physiographic regions of the southern U.S.; however, there have been few large comparative studies. Our approach was to combine field measuremen...
متن کاملInternal Loading in Southeastern Piedmont Impoundments
In Piedmont impoundments in Georgia, as well as lakes and impoundments throughout the world, accelerated eutrophication of lakes causes detrimental ecological effects such as algal blooms, lake anoxia and toxic metal release from sediments. It often renders water unsafe for agricultural use, recreation and drinking. To reduce the eutrophication of local Piedmont impoundments, recent regulatory ...
متن کاملStream Nitrogen Responses to Fire
Fire can play a sigdicant role in runoff, sediment yield, and nitrate transport in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the southeast US. The typical impact of fire is an immediate change in the physical properties of the soil and forest floor surface, followed by midand long-term changes in biological pools and cycling processes. Depending upon the severity of the fire and p b u r n condition...
متن کاملBiogeochemical Processes and Implications for Nutrient Cycling
The availability and cycling of nutrients is determined by an interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes in an ecosystem. This interaction of processes, collectively known as biogeochemistry, is important as it determines the forms, transformations, and ultimate fate of nutrients in a given system. This chapter focuses on biogeochemical processes in springs and spring runs with...
متن کاملSHIMMER (1.0): a novel mathematical model for microbial and biogeochemical dynamics in glacier forefield ecosystems
SHIMMER (Soil biogeocHemIcal Model for Microbial Ecosystem Response) is a new numerical modelling framework designed to simulate microbial dynamics and biogeochemical cycling during initial ecosystem development in glacier forefield soils. However, it is also transferable to other extreme ecosystem types (such as desert soils or the surface of glaciers). The rationale for model development aris...
