چکیده
The IEEE working group is currently standardizing a new media access control MAC protocol for the emerging Hybrid Fiber Coax HFC networks Crucial for the success of will be its ability to support higher layer tra c services namely ATM Constant Bit Rate CBR Variable Bit Rate VBR and Available Bit Rate ABR tra c classes In this study we investigate the interoperation of the MAC protocol de ned by with ABR transmissions An important nding of our study is that the bandwidth contention on the upstream channel in the HFC network may interfere with the feedback congestion control mechanisms of ABR tra c control This inter ference can result in unfairness between ABR sources and decreased utilization of the upstream HFC channel As a solution to the problem we propose a scheme whereby the headend station of the HFC network returns congestion information contained in resource management RM cells to the ABR sources The proposed mechanism can be incorporated into the ABR rate control scheme without modifying the current tra c management speci cations Numerous simulation scenarios are presented to illustrate our ndings Parts of the results have been presented to the IEEE standardization committee

The IEEE 802.14 working group is currently standardizing a new media access control (MAC) protocol for the emerging Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks. Crucial for the success of 802.14 will be its ability to support higher layer tra c services, namely, ATM Constant Bit Rate (CBR), Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and Available Bit Rate (ABR) tra c classes. In this study, we investigate the inter-operatio...

In ATM networks the user network interface con guration strongly in uences the per formance of the network and determines the functional complexity of network elements A main issue for example is the location of tra c shaping devices at the private and public user network interface Tra c shaping may be performed by customer premises equipment or by ATM switches itself This paper presents a deco...
متن کاملConnection Admission Control for Hard Real-Time Communication in ATM Networks
Connection Admission Control (CAC) is needed in ATM networks to provide Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees to real-time connections. This paper presents a CAC scheme based on a bit-stream tra c model, which is capable of modeling tra c generation patterns of CBR/VBR connections and tra c distortions within a network, and worstcase queueing analysis to obtain cell queueing delay bounds. The pro...

For the future development of residential broadband telecommunication services the present access infrastructure must be upgraded. Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) optical networks, though still expensive today, appear to be a future-proof solution. FTTH networks based on passive optical Remote Nodes (RN) and supporting ATM switching (ATM-PONs) have been demonstrated and are going to be standardized. I...
