Combinatorial Auctions for Trucking Service Procurement: An Examination of Carrier Bidding Policies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Combinatorial auctions are increasingly used by large shippers as a method to establish service contracts with trucking companies. In order to achieve maximal benefits in these auctions, carriers must determine a bidding policy that can accurately evaluate the costs they will incur to fulfil these contracts and which can quickly examine many different possible options. In this paper, we analyze the complexity of this bidding problem for the procurement of truckload trucking service contracts; further, we propose an optimization-based approximation method to aid a carrier in constructing bids. Using a simulation framework, we examine the performance of this method elative to a straightforward bidding policy similar to those used in practice.

An Optimization Framework for Combining the Petroleum Replenishment Problem with the Optimal Bidding in Combinatorial Auctions
We address in this paper a periodic petroleum station replenishment problem (PPSRP) that aims to plan the delivery of petroleum products to a set of geographically dispatched stations. It is assumed that each station is characterized by its weekly demand and by its frequency of service. The main objective of the delivery process is to minimize the total travelled distance by the vailable trucks...
متن کاملTransportation Service Procurement Using Combinatorial Auction
Auction is a mechanism of selling distinct assets that can be both physical objects and virtual objects. Examples of virtual objects are the rights to use assets like airport time slots and FCC spectrum, or to service truckload delivery routes in a transportation network. Under some situations bidding on combinations of objects can render lower total price compare with bidding the objects one a...
متن کاملCarrier Bidding Strategies for Iterative Auctions for Transportation Services
Transportation service procurement auctions are typically characterized by limited number of rounds and low profit margin. In this paper we address the bid determination problem for single-lane and combinatorial bids in the successive rounds of an auction, which maximizes the profit and also ensures winning. A profit factor (PF) is computed at each round using the industry average price for thi...
متن کاملSimplified Bidding and Solution Methodology for Truckload Procurement and Other VCG Combinatorial Auctions
In theory, combinatorial auctions can provide significant benefits in many real-world applications, such as truckload procurement. In practice, however, the use of such auctions has been greatly limited by the need for bidders to bid on an exponential number of bundles and for the auctioneer to solve an exponentially large winner-determination problem. We address these challenges for VCG combin...
متن کاملCombinatorial Auctions for Transportation Service Procurement: The Carrier Perspective
The procurement of transportation services is an important task for shippers because of the need to control costs at the same time as providing high service levels. When shippers with goods and/or materials to transport seek transportation services from outside companies they typically put out a request for quotes from a set of carriers. They then assign contracts based on negotiated service ch...
